Human civilization has been increasingly perceived in recent years, especially since the Stockholm Conference in 1972, that there is no long-term development without consideration of the preservation of the environment. The theme of solid waste appears as one of the main subjects pertinent to this discussion. In Brazil, the Environmental Public Administration Agenda (A3P), the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS) and the Decree that established the Sustainable Logistics Program (PLS), contributed to establish guidelines and practices of sustainability in the public sector. In this context, this dissertation aimed to diagnose the current solid waste situation at the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA), through a research that collaborates with the sustainable management of the university, assisting in the development of PLS / UFMA. A questionnaire was applied to managers, aiming to diagnose the situation of sustainability and solid waste in UFMA, in the view of real decision makers. The research has yielded important results, such as the need to properly dispose of hazardous waste and re-fitting campus waste collectors. It also presented viable proposals for solutions to the problems diagnosed. The work may contribute, in academic and management terms, to other public and private institutions, especially federal universities, that aim to comply with applicable legislation and improve their PLS, as well as to advance in the issues of sustainability and the correct destination of waste solids.
