Resumo: This dissertation aims to discuss and analyze the interdisciplinarity between Literature, History and Art, based on the aesthetic influences of the second half of the 19th century on the life and work of Aluísio de Azevedo, in the cities where he spent much of his life, São Luís do Maranhão and Rio de Janeiro, presenting them from a temporal perspective. The objective of such writings is to verify the respective behaviors of societies in relation to his work, analyzing their history, aesthetics, literature and plastic arts, with methodological development of theoretical, qualitative, exploratory and bibliographic analysis, reflecting on data in a critical and objective way. To carry it out, we sought authors who conversed with the historicity and criticality of Aluísio de Azevedo, such as: Jean Yves Merian, Luis Melo, Marlzonni Marrelli Matos Mauricio, Leudjane Michelle Viegas Diniz, Yi-Fu Tuan, Lélia Gonzales, Carlos Hasenbalg e Olavo Bilac, in addition to a delve into his works, O mulato and O cortiço, which map the societies mentioned above. The research examines the economic, social and cultural panorama of these societies in the 19th century, showing how much the two cities played a fundamental role in the construction of their artistic and critical character. It also highlights Aluísio de Azevedo's opinion of the rural aristocracy and the government as sponsors of the social adversities experienced in 19th century Brazil. It also transfers his criticality to caricatures, showing his development in the profession and also how literature is a reflection of the painter and caricaturist.

Submitted by Jonathan Sousa de Almeida (jonathan.sousa@ufma.br) on 2025-07-14T17:46:41Z No. of bitstreams: 1 JÚLIO_MÁXIMO.pdf: 39311013 bytes, checksum: 879183f40008e954a9be15636cc7778a (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2025-07-14T17:46:41Z (GMT). description This dissertation aims to discuss and analyze the interdisciplinarity between Literature, History and Art, based on the aesthetic influences of the second half of the 19th century on the life and work of Aluísio de Azevedo, in the cities where he spent much of his life, São Luís do Maranhão and Rio de Janeiro, presenting them from a temporal perspective.
