This research consists of a review of the Modern Movement in Brazil, especially in initiatives aimed at residential construction, from the perspective of the sociopolitical particularities observed at the time of its implementation. The objective of this study is to present the singularities of this production, which are not conveyed, deepened or presented by the main bibliographical references on this eventuality. Unlike a large number of works that are references in studies on the Modern Movement in Brazil, the study invested here argues that the genesis of this movement in Brazilian residential architecture is associated with the main social events that occurred in the country in the second half of the 19th century, guided, above all, by the implementation of the Euzébio de Queirós Law and the abolition of slavery, enacted in 1850 and 1888, respectively. In this way, we seek to narrate Brazilian modern architecture with the voice of the political and cultural scenario of this moment, which differs greatly from the European and North American contexts, whose relationship is often evidenced by the literature on this subject and which culminates in generalized and totalizing instructions on the case in Brazil.
