Resumo: The efficiency measures have been consolidating as consistent alternatives for analysis of performance in financial institutions. In this context, this research aimed to analyze the relationship between credit risk and the efficiency of Brazilian credit unions, considering the period between the first half of 2008 and the second half of 2017. As a methodological tool, the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) in two stages, to estimate the efficiency scores of a sample of 450 financial cooperatives. The Tobit regression model, which considers data censorship, was adopted in the second stage of the analysis, which aims to verify the influence of contextual variables on efficiency scores. The Econometric models indicated that the overall mean of efficiencies throughout the period above was 99.78% for the institutions studied and that about 30.69% of the cooperatives reached the level of 100% in the scores, on average, throughout the decade searched. It should be emphasized that the outputs Operating Revenues and Reserves, incorporated into the DEA model as a result of the suggestion of the specialists consulted in the present work, were highlighted in the construction of the efficiency scores estimated by the model. It was found that cooperatives with higher credit risk had lower efficiency scores and the variables Service Points and Recession Dummy also presented a statistically significant and negative relationship with efficiency. On the other hand, the experience acquired by the cooperative, as measured by its Time of Existence, as well as Diversification, proved to be beneficial considering its impacts on the efficiency scores, which were statistically significant and positive. The fact of addressing only one of the several dimensions of performance is a limitation of this work. The importance of such studies in this line of work is based on the very uniqueness of the role played by credit unions in the national financial sector, as well as being a current issue that has an effect on the perspective of the cooperatives themselves, subsidizing their strategic decisions and contributing to the regulatory policies of these institutions.
