Resumo: This research has the goal to understand the dynamics of the harmonic structure used by the Brazilian composer Elomar Figueira Mello. By using the lens of the multiple harmonic functions (i.e. several simultaneous interpretations for a same harmonic event), the organization of the harmonic elements in Elomars works (including his characteristic, unusual, yet coherent traits) is investigated. The research also aims to identify other factors that interact to bring effective-ness to unexpected modulations and modulations to distant regions or modes in the Elomarsmusic, like melodic elements, ties between keys and modes and the textmusic relationship. The adopted methodology includes: literature review on modal harmony; manual analysis of 49 songs to identify harmonic elements and procedures used by the composer; development of a software for automatic identication of keys and modes; automatic analysis of the 49 songs; and, nally, selection and deeper manual analysis of four songs.
