Resumo: | This dissertation examines the separation of architectural design from architectural construction. It is divided into two parts. The first one concerns a theoretical approach and addresses the role of drawing by following the tracks of Sérgio Ferro’s critique on separate design, providing new historical elements. The process of conception has been separated from construction since the Renaissance and drawing is analysed according to its function in constructive operations. The goal is to understand how architectural design got detached from the material operation to which it refers to, and began following the logic of the drawing instruments. The second part of the thesis concerns a pedagogical issue. The Architecture course of the University of Porto (FAUP) was a case study for observing the role of drawing in architectural education. This study is integrated into a broader panorama that starts from the foundation of teaching of drawing in Porto city. FAUP belongs to the tradition of architecture as a mental thing where the exercise of free hand drawing is cultivated specifically as a cognitive tool and a process of thinking. Thus, the thesis deals with architectural design observed in two broad areas. On the one hand, it observes the negative attributes established by the dissociation between conceiving-building. On the other hand, it observes the positive attributes arising from that separation: drawing transcended its role as merely an operative activity and once separated it could be speculative and become an instrument for thinking, an exercise of personal expression and a means to know the world. The thesis concludes by conceiving the emancipatory function of drawing. If drawing has been responsible for the distancing between architectural design and construction, it can also be the answer for reintegration. |

A primeira, é uma viagem pelo caminho da separação entre concepção e construção, em que o desenho é analisado a partir das suas funções nas operações construtivas. O propósito é perceber como, desde o Renascimento, o desenho se foi desvinculando da operação material à qual se referia e começou a seguir a lógica dos próprios instrumentos de desenho. Esse percurso segue as pistas da crítica do desenho separado elaborada por Sérgio Ferro, mobilizando outros elementos históricos para essa leitura. Na questão pedagógica, que constitui a segunda parte da tese, é analisado o lugar do desenho no curso de Arquitetura da Universidade do Porto (FAUP). Este estudo de caso é integrado num panorama alargado que abre com a instituição do ensino oficial de desenho na cidade, estruturado a partir das determinações da academia — 0 lugar onde se aprende a desenhar, não a construir. A FAUP insere-se assim no contexto da tradição da arquitetura como coisa mental em que o exercício do desenho à mão livre é cultivado e afirmado especificamente como ferramenta e processo de pensamento. Assim, a tese trata do desenho de arquitetura observado em dois grandes âmbitos. Por um lado, observa os atributos negativos instaurados pela dissociação conceber-construir. Por outro lado, observa os atributos positivos advindos dessa separação, quando o desenho transcendeu o seu caráter meramente operativo e, uma vez separado, pôde ser especulativo e reflexivo, tornando-se instrumento de pensamento, exercício pessoal de expressão e meio para o conhecimento do mundo. O ponto de partida desta tese é a crítica do projeto que se separou da obra pela emergência do desenho com uma função prescritiva e dominadora, como linguagem de especialistas. O lugar de chegada é o desenho com função emancipadora, considerado a partir das potencialidades da prática do desenho livre, que pode instituir uma comunicação inclusiva entre arquitetos, construtores e habitantes, abrindo a discussão para outras possibilidades espaciais e construtivas.
