Resumo: | Daily, Brazil discards tons of waste, the majority of which is directed towards sanitary landfills. The remainder is largely disposed of in open fields, including waterways, rivers, and forest areas adjacent to urban centers. Consequently, the inappropriate disposal of Brazilian waste results in environmental contamination of water reservoirs, rivers, and forested areas; proliferation of disease vector animals and insects; emission of noxious gases, and squandering of potentially recyclable materials. Observing a school and its vicinity in Ribeirão das Neves, this study proposes a didactic sequence (DS) with an investigative approach, addressing the environmental issues arising from substantial waste generation and mismanagement in this community. The project engaged students in diagnosing the root causes of waste accumulation around the school and throughout the municipality, stimulating them to suggest ecological awareness practices that could mitigate the problems engendered by incorrect waste deposition. This initiative aligns with the integrative axes of the new High School curriculum, where students, through proposing interventions in their school and community, play a central role in the teaching-learning process, applying biological knowledge to their daily lives. The didactic sequence was implemented in a first-year High School class across six stages (12 sessions of 50 minutes each), facilitating learning experiences that enabled students to connect theoretical knowledge with practical application. Beyond these outcomes, the students created awareness materials and practical solutions to mitigate the waste-related issues. O restante é, quase na sua totalidade, descartado em terrenos abertos e até mesmo em córregos, rios e áreas florestais próximas de centros urbanos. Assim, o destino impróprio do lixo produzido no Brasil acarreta em poluição ambiental em reservatórios de água, rios e áreas florestadas; proliferação de animais e insetos vetores de doenças; produção de gases nocivos, além de desperdício de materiais potencialmente reutilizáveis. A partir da observação deuma escola e de seus arredores, localizada no município de Ribeirão das Neves, esse trabalho propõe uma sequência didática (SD), comabordageminvestigativa,sobre os problemas ambientaiscausados pela grande produção e descarte incorreto do lixo nessa comunidade. O projeto envolveuos estudantes na elaboração de um diagnóstico sobre as causas do acúmulo de lixo nas redondezasda escola, e no município como um todo, incentivando-os a proporem práticas de conscientizaçãoecológica que minimizassem os problemas provocados pela deposição incorreta do lixo. Este projeto corroborou com os eixos integradores do novo Ensino Médio, no qual, os estudantes ao proporem intervenções na escola e comunidade, foram protagonistas no processo de ensino e aprendizagem, utilizando o conhecimento construído nas aulas de Biologia na sua vida cotidiana.A sequência didática foi aplicada em uma turma de 1º Ano do Ensino Médio sendo desenvolvida em 6 etapas (12 aulas de 50 minutos cada), com situações de aprendizagem que permitiram aos estudantes estabelecerem conexões entre teoria e prática.
