Resumo: This work examines the polemic practice of the presentation of patients, considering a contradiction found by the author among the effects gathered and her experience with this practice, by psychoanalysis, and the resistance to encounter for its achievement. In order to have a possible critical position and clarify about the theme, a historical course of analyses by its appearance, highlighting the differences of these practices in the medical, psychiatric, and psychoanalytical traditions. For both, researched experiences by Charcot, Clérambault, and Lacan, are recognized as practitioners of the presentation of patients. Bear in mind that the main interest in this mechanism is its use in psychoanalysis, also exploring the relations of Freud within this practice. The mapping of the use of the presentation of patients throughout the history of psychiatry permits, at the end of the work, the logical analysis about the discourses, as proposed by Lacan.

A fim de possibilitar uma posição crítica e esclarecida sobre o tema, fez-se um percurso histórico analisando seu surgimento, ressaltando as diferenças dessa prática nas tradições médica, psiquiátrica e psicanalítica. Para tanto, investigou-se as experiências de Charcot, Clérambault e Lacan, reconhecidos praticantes da apresentação de pacientes. Tendo em vista que o principal interesse nesse dispositivo, é o seu uso pela psicanálise, investiga-se também as relações de Freud essa prática.
