Resumo: There are few studies about the prevalence of oral breathing and they are full of variation. The mouthbreathing syndrome has a lot of causes, and a lot of variables are related to it. The aim of this study was to determinate the prevalence of oral breathing and investigate the associated factors in children from 3 to 9 years old residents ofAbaeté- MG. Its a population study with random samples, statistically significant and representative of the urban region of the city. The total population is 23.596 habitants and the group of children that fits in this study range age is formed by 2.927 infants, whereas 2.490 (85,07%) live in the urban area and 427 (14,93%) in the rural area. The initial sample was composed by 370 children, 177 female and 193 male (mean age 5,93 ± 1,94). 1.538 houses were visited and after the term of free enlightened consent was signed and the social-economic-environment questionnaire was answered by their parents, the children were lead to the pediatrician ambulatory, kept by the Secretaria Municipal de Saúde for the interview, pediatrics exams and otorhinolaryngological evaluation. 204 (55,1%) of the 370 children were considered oral breathers by clinical criterions and were submitted to fiberoptic examination of nasopharynx, allergic skin test and lateral radiograph of the nasopharynx, complete hemogram, eosinophilic countage, total IgE and feces parasit exame. The 204 children of this sample, eleven (5,4%) didn´t continue in the study and eighteen (8,8%) didn´t complete all solicited exams. The data were analysed with the SPSS program, 10.5 version. The results allow to determinate in 55,1% of prevalence of the oral breathing. The signs and symptoms are: sleeping with opened mouth, snoring, scretching the nose and dribble on the pillow. The allergic rhinitis, the tonsillar and adenoid hypertrophy and nasal septal deviation are the causes of oral breathing and these results are similar to other studies
