In this dissertation, I will talk about a problem of great importance in Humian thought, whether it is possible to justifiably affirm or deny the existence of god. I investigate whether theism, deism or atheism can be sustained without contradicting the operations of human understanding. In my hypothesis, the analysis of the understanding in the first Enquiry leads us to another solution, which is the suspension of judgment, or impossibility of justifiably asserting that god exists or that god does not exist – what we would nowadays call agnostic position. I understand that this interpretation is supported by other texts by the author, which will eventually be present here. James Noxon and J. C. A. Gaskin work on Hume’s agnosticism, there is an interesting debate between the two about this, in the last chapter I go into their texts. Before that, I present divergent commentators, especially to counter those who claim that Hume believed in some kind of god. I defend agnosticism as the only sustainable statement.
