The aim of this thesis is to analyze the recent evolution of poverty in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte. Census data from 2000 and 2010 were used. The method used to analyze poverty is a combination of the unsatisfied basic needs method and the poverty line method. This approach allows us to assess both temporary and structural aspects of metropolitan poverty. The results from this research have shown positive changes in the living conditions of the metropolitan population, since the proportion of poor people dropped from 46% in 2000 to 31% in 2010. The socially integrated population increased from 2.3 million to 3.3 million, while the poor population declined from 1.9 million to 1.4 million. The decline in the incidence of poverty is widespread, but its level still remains spatially uneven. The macro-spatial structure of poverty shows disparities between the spatial concentration of the poor and the incidence of poverty in the cities. The decline in poverty was also observed among immigrants of the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte: among the ones who moving within the metropolitan area and among those coming from other places
