Resumo: The central objective of this dissertation was to establish a comparative study on the role of the contemporary hero, taking as texts for analysis the novel Meu tio Roseno, a Cavalo, by Wilson Bueno, and the short story “Meu tio o Iauaretê”, by João Guimarães Rosa, the corpora of our proposal. In addition to studies on the hero, other subsidiary literary comparisons between Bueno's and Rosa's texts were developed, such as the levels of violence that permeate them, connected to an idea of regionality, the backcountry space and the languages of a hybrid backlands. The research used a comparative methodology between the works of Wilson Bueno and João Guimarães Rosa, especially between Meu tio Roseno, a Cavalo and the short stories “Meu tio o Iauaretê” and “A hora e vez de Augusto Matraga”, the latter by more restricted way. It is noteworthy that at no time was there any type of hierarchy due to the literary canon, since our purpose was to investigate, between similarities and differences, elements that could support hypotheses of literary interpretation in the Brazilian backcountry universe. The outstanding theoretical contributions to our investigation were: Walter Benjamin, Aristotle, Maurice Halbwachs, Jeanne Marie Gagnebin, Antonio Candido and Otto Maria Carpeaux.

Além dos estudos sobre o herói, outras comparações literárias subsidiárias entre os textos de Bueno e de Rosa foram desenvolvidos, como os índices de violência que os permeiam, conectados a uma ideia de regionalidade, o espaço sertanejo e os linguajares de um sertão híbrido. A pesquisa utilizou-se de metodologia comparativa entre as obras de Wilson Bueno e João Guimarães Rosa, sobretudo entre Meu tio Roseno, a cavalo e os contos “Meu tio o Iauaretê” e “A hora e vez de Augusto Matraga”, este último de modo mais restrito. Ressalta-se que em nenhum momento houve qualquer tipo de hierarquização em razão do cânone literário, posto que nosso propósito foi investigar, entre semelhanças e diferenças, elementos que pudessem fundamentar hipóteses de interpretação literária no universo sertanejo brasileiro.
