Resumo: Objective: To investigate whether Brazilian Olympic athletes live longer than the general population. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study with secondary data analysis. Data from all Brazilian athletes of both sexes, age and sports played from the seventh edition of the Modern Olympic Games (1920) to the twenty-fifth edition (1992) were included. Data were obtained from two main databases, the website of the Brazilian Olympic Committee and the book Atletas Olímpicos Brasileiros, by author Katia Rubio. Data such as gender, date of birth, date of death, sport modality and sub-modality or racing were collected. Comparisons were made between athletes vs general population matched by sex and age and between strength/power (FP) vs endurance/mixed athletes (RM). Results: More than 54.37% of athletes are 79.75% more likely to live longer than expected for the general population. There was no difference in life expectancy when comparing athletes from FP (69 years) vs RM (68.6 years) sports, p value = 0.90. Conclusion: Brazilian Olympic athletes live longer than the general population matched by sex and age. However, there are no differences between athletes who play sports with FP and RM characteristics, with regard to longevity. Keywords: modality, life expectancy, age, sex

Foram contemplados dados de todos os atletas brasileiros, de ambos os sexos, idade e modalidades disputadas a partir da sétima edição dos Jogos Olímpicos Modernos (1920) até a vigésima quinta edição (1992). Os dados foram obtidos de duas principais bases: o sítio eletrônico do Comitê Olímpico Brasileiro e o livro Atletas Olímpicos Brasileiros, da autora Katia Rubio. Dados como sexo, data de nascimento, data de óbito, modalidade e sub-modalidade esportiva ou prova, foram coletados. Foram feitas comparações entre os atletas vs população geral pareada pela idade e entre atletas de força/ potência (FP) vs resistência/ misto (RM). Resultados: Mais de 54,37% dos atletas têm 79,75% mais chances de viver mais do que o esperado para a população em geral. A expectativa de vida dos atletas foi maior do que a expectativa de vida da população em geral. Não houve diferença na expectativa de vida ao comparar atletas de FP (69 anos) vs RM (68,6 anos), valor de p = 0,90. Conclusão: os atletas olímpicos brasileiros vivem mais do que o esperado para a população geral pareada por sexo e idade. Porém, não há diferenças entre os atletas que praticam esportes com características de FP e RM, no que diz respeito à longevidade.
