Resumo: Toponymy is a discipline of Onomastics, a field of study linked to Linguistics, which investigates proper names of places, both in rural and urban areas, with strong connections to History, Geography, Anthropology, among other areas of knowledge. Despite the importance of proper names of places, as they are the part of the lexicon that tends to be the longest-lasting and, therefore, perpetuate information about the language of the people of a region, perfectly sedimented in their cultural values and in the aspects of the physical environment where they are transmitted, the state of Mato Grosso still lacks less specific studies that can cover the study of the toponymy of its immense territory. It is a basic premise that toponymy reveals aspects of the physical and sociocultural environment of a region. In this context, the following hypotheses were established for this research: i) the geographic nomenclature of the investigated area values the regional lexical norm in the toponymic lexicon of the region; ii) the indigenous-based toponymy is significant in quantitative terms in the toponymic vocabulary of the municipalities in question and iii) the toponymization process of geographic features is productive in the toponymy of the investigated area. This Thesis has as its general objective to study the toponymy of the physical and human features of 27 municipalities of Mato Grosso in an interface between the toponymic lexicon, the history and the culture of the investigated region. In a specific scope, the study had the following purposes: i) to investigate the toponyms that integrate the research area with a focus on semantic motivation, the language of origin and the morphological structure, based on works in the areas of Lexicology and Onomastics, especially Dick (1990; 1992; 1997; 2004); Biderman (1981, 1998...); Isquerdo (1996; 1997; 2001; 2012; 2013...); Trapero (1995), among other authors; ii) Analyze the representativeness of the languages spoken by the native peoples in toponymy; iii) describe particularities of the toponymy examined regarding diatopic distribution and iv) evaluate to what extent generic names are projected in toponymy through the process of toponymization of geographic accidents. To achieve the objectives, procedures characteristic of toponymic research were adopted: i) collection of data from topographic maps of the IBGE (2010); ii) classification of toponyms according to taxonomy; iii) quantification and analysis of data and iv) examination of possible connections established between linguistic information and aspects of geography, history and culture, relevant in the time and space in which the naming occurred. The analysis of the corpus (2,012 toponyms) demonstrated that the toponymic motivation of the total sum of the toponyms investigated revolves around nature with its variety of plants in the category of phytotoponyms (Bananal, Sapezal, Taquaruçu...); animals, in the zootoponyms (Uirapuru, Lambari, Onça...); water resources in the category of hydrotoponyms (Corgão, Corixão, Cabeceira...); landforms, in the geomorphotoponyms (Pantanal, Bocaina, Morrinho...). Alongside these trends, the research demonstrated that man, taking possession of the place and considering cultural entities, also names the space from the perspective of culture and history: anthropotoponyms (Florestan Fernandes, Marcela, Cáceres, Clemente, Adrianópolis...); hagiotoponyms (São Miguelito, São José do Pingadouro, Santa Rita...); animotoponyms (Happy, Beautiful, Pretty, Confusion...); ergotoponyms (Old Corral, Pestle, Monjolinho...); sociotoponyms (Retreat, Port, Mascate...). In linguistic terms, the Portuguese language is present in 1,522 toponyms (75.64%), followed by the tupi language, which is the basis of 357 toponyms (17.74%), either as a simple or hybrid structure. In the total sum of the data, 409 (20.32%) toponyms are configured as names consisting of at least one formant of the indigenous Tupi, Guarani, Bororo or Arawak languages. Regarding the morphological structure, 881 (43.78%) names have a simple structure; 436 (21.66%) toponyms have a compound structure; 190 (9.44%) denominatives present a hybrid compound structure and 165 (8.20%) a simple hybrid structure. The research also confirmed the presence of accidental toponymization in 222 (11.03%) toponyms. Regarding regional marks in toponymy, the 29 (1.44%) toponyms that retain regional meanings show that at least four Brazilian states influenced the process of constitution and naming of landforms belonging to municipalities. The low occurrence rate of toponyms formed by regionalisms from Mato Grosso testifies to the linguistic-cultural miscegenation caused by the process of colonization and occupation of the territory of the state of Mato Grosso by inhabitants of other Brazilian regions, with emphasis on the south and southeast. Toponymy.
