The municipality of Rio Verde de Mato Grosso/MS is located between the plateau and the Pantanal sedimentary basin, and in the geological context of outcrops of the sedimentary formation known as Ponta Grossa. This work seeks to contribute to the teaching of Geography, based on the context in which the municipality is located, inherent to the archaeological and geopaleontological sites of the Ponta Grossa formation. Based on the assumption that Geography is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary science and is present in society, it is believed that as a school subject it is part of the reality and environment in which students find themselves. The research aims to analyze the geopaleontological and archaeological potential as a pedagogical resource in Geography teaching and present teaching and learning strategies applicable to reality and provide students with the recognition of a regional identity and value and protect the heritage around them. To achieve the proposed objectives, bibliographical reviews were carried out on the topic, as well as field research to identify the educational potential of archaeological and geopaleontological sites present in the region and interviews with Geography teachers from the state education network. The research results point to contributions to the application of language approaches in Geography teaching based on the surrounding environment, instigating the preservation of historical-cultural heritage and empowering students with knowledge synchronized with the context in which they live.
