A metodologia adotada na pesquisa envolveu a análise bibliográfica e um estudo de caso, utilizando para esse fim a Associação Regional de Proteção Ambiental do Alto Paraopeba e Vale do Piranga – ARPAPP. A pesquisa bibliográfica conceitua e avalia as dimensões teóricas das ONGs dentro do setor, descrevendo os meios pelos quais buscam e mantêm sua sustentabilidade. O estudo de caso contemplou a análise documental, seguida de informações sobre a prática e os resultados colhidos pela ARPAPP. É feita uma avaliação do seu desempenho e de aspectos associados à sua sustentabilidade com base nos resultados da aplicação de questionário, com a participação de associados, funcionários e estagiários. Os dados coletados permitiram identificar as características da gestão da Instituição e foram utilizados como base para a elaboração de um diagnóstico organizacional. Entre as principais características identificadas da organização destacaram-se a gestão participativa e a dependência de recursos oriundos dominantemente do setor público estatal e de doações. Pelo diagnóstico, são apontadas ações estratégicas a serem desenvolvidas em prol da sustentabilidade organizacional. As conclusões do estudo evidenciam que a sustentabilidade da ARPAPP está vinculada à dependência dos repasses estatais, embora tenham sido implementadas iniciativas com vistas à sua consolidação financeira por meio de modelo de gestão participativa capazes de atender e manter índices favoráveis de autossustentabilidade.The study deals about the socioenvironmental organizations and their importance to the regional sustainable development. The research methodology adopted has involved bibliography analysis and a case study, using for this purpose the Associação Regional de Proteção Ambiental do Alto Paraopeba e Vale do Piranga – ARPAPP [Regional Association of Environmental Protection Alto Paraopeba and Vale do Piranga] . The bibliography research conceptualizes and evaluates the ONG’s theoretical dimensions inside the sector, describing the means by which they seek and maintain their sustainability. The case study included the documental analysis, followed by the informations about the practice e results collected by ARPAPP. An assessment of their performance and aspects associated with sustainability is made based on the results of a questionnaire, with the participation of members, employees and trainees. The collected data allowed to identify the characteristics of the institution management and were used as a basis for the development of an organizational diagnosis. Among the identified key characteristics of the organization stood out participatory management and dependence on resources from dominantly of state public sector and donations. At diagnosis, strategic actions to be developed in support of organizational sustainability are identified.
