Departamento de Letras, Instituto de Ciências Humanas e Sociais, Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto.Este trabalho tem por objetivo analisar comparativamente as obras do poeta britânico William Wordsworth Wordsworth (1770-1850) e do escritor francês Marcel Proust (1871-1922) no que concerne à maneira como eles representam tanto o funcionamento da memória quanto o do luto. Para fazê-lo, será necessário considerar as condições que permitiram emergir, no séc. XVIII, novas concepções tanto em relação ao modo de representação literária quanto em relação ao modo de entender-se o funcionamento da memória, que passa a levar em conta o papel das afecções e do esquecimento em sua constituição, algo que tinha um papel periférico até então. Desse modo, será necessário reconstruir a discussão por meio de autores que se debruçaram sobre o tema e dramatizaram essas passagens: em relação à mudança de concepção que se tem de memória, serão apresentadas as discussões de autores como Aleida Assmann e Paul Ricoeur; em relação à mudança de paradigmas na representação literária, serão apresentados os trabalhos teóricos como M.H. Abrams e Jacques Rancière, que abordam o tema com bastante clareza. A partir do momento que essas variáveis são consideradas, poderá ser notado que as imagens representadas por meio da memória adquirem um caráter instável, de modo que podem ser modificadas a cada vez que são reiteradas. Após serem delineadas essas condições de possibilidade, bem como o contexto histórico em que se apresentam - qual seja, o da Revolução Francesa e da emergência da Modernidade, que inauguram novas concepções de indivíduo e de funcionamento da mente - serão abordados alguns poemas de Wordsworth e algumas passagens da Recherche, em que o luto é figurado. Poderá ser percebido que a nova concepção de memória como algo instável por excelência tem um papel importante na maneira de se representar pessoas que já faleceram, pois elas continuam existindo de alguma forma por meio da escrita literária, criando-se uma tensão entre a sua ausência física e sua presença por meio da ficção.This paper has the intend to comparatively analize the works by the British poet William Wordsworth (1770-1850), and by the French writer Marcel Proust (1871-1922), regarding to the way they represent, in their works, either the functioning of the memory or the grief itself. To do that, it will be necessary to consider the possibility conditions which allow to emerge, during the 18th century, new conceptions of literary representation, and the way of understanding the functioning of memory, which starts to take into account the role of the emotions and the forgetting in its constitution, something that, as we will see, had a peripheral role until then. At this moment, it will be necessary to realign the the discussion through authors who have looked into those themes, and have dramatized those passages: regarding to the changing of conception about memory, it will be presented discussions of authors like Aleida Assmann and Paul Ricoeur; regarding to the changing of conception of literary representation, it will be presented works of academics like M.H. Abrams and Jacques Rancière, who lead the theme with great clarity. From the moment those variable are considered, one will be able to notice that the images represented through the memory obtain an unstable character, so they can be modified each time they are reiterated. After being outlined those possibility conditions as well as the historical context in which they exist – which is the French Revolution and the emerging of Modernity, that inaugurate new conceptions of individual and of the functioning of the mind – it will be approached some poems by William Wordsworth and some passages from the Recherche, in which the grief is represented.
