Resumo: The goal of this research is to investigate the thought of Brazilian intellectual Carlos Nelson Coutinho from the perspective of the translatability of political ideas between Italy and Brazil. The context in which the research is situated covers the decades of 1970-1980, a period in which the country was under civil-military dictatorship and the struggle for democratic opening was demanded by various sectors of civil society. It was during this time that Coutinho had greater contact with European socialist currents, due to his exile in Europe in 1976, introducing influences of eurocommunism into his thinking, especially the interpretation of democracy as a universal value. Therefore, we will seek to demonstrate how Coutinho translated the democratic path to socialism, taking into account the specificities of Brazil.
