Resumo: | Born in Campina Grande, Paraíba, Eli-Eri Moura is a composer, pianist and conductor. His extensive body of work features varied instrumentation, combining both traditional techniques inspired by the Renaissance and those linked to contemporary music. This research focuses on Eli-Eri Moura's choral compositions, with the general objective of identifying the main characteristics and interpretative possibilities of Psalms 150, 121 and 23 from both the conductor’s and the choir’s perspectives. The specific objectives are as follows: 1) to understand the key characteristics of Eli-Eri Moura's choral works; 2) to identify the aesthetic, structural and symbolic aspects of Psalms 150, 121 and 23, examining the rhetorical relation between text and music; and 3) to explore the correlations between rhetorical analysis and the interpretation of these works. This qualitative study is based on bibliographic and documentary research aimed at understanding the life and work of the composer. The analysis of the selected pieces is informed by Bartel (1997), using a rhetorical framework that connects textual and musical elements and examines their impact on the interpretation of the repertoire. In line with Paul (2020) and Sieck (2017), we propose a rehearsal methodology based on problem-solving, which resulted in the creation of a dialogical process-product. This process is characterized by the proactivity of the choir members, participants-collaborators, within a safe and respectful environment. Fieldwork was conducted with the Campina Grande Chamber Choir, focusing on the preparation of the repertoire and examining the correlations between rhetorical analysis and performance interpretation. The study culminated in a concert featuring Psalms 150, 121 and 23, alongside other pieces by the composer. Additionally, we report and reflect on the musical and extramusical challenges encountered during the process, offering insights into the solutions found. The results of this research demonstrate the use of several rhetorical devices by Eli-Eri Moura within his sacred choral works and emphasize the importance of understanding the text-music relation for effective interpretation. Moreover, incorporating these concepts into the planning, rehearsal and performance processes contributes to a more meaningful, informed and enriching choral practice for both the conductor and the choristers. |
