This research analyses the processes of verticalization and (re)production of space in the quarter of Manaíra in João Pessoa, Paraíba, located in the coastal area with a population of 26.369 inhabitants, according to data from the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). It is a qualitative analysis making use of quantitative data. The methodology adopted was the one suggested by Costa (2000), considering the time span from 2000 to 2010. The referred methodology starts from the classification of multi-storey buildings, that is, those with more than four storeys or four storeys with an elevator. The theoretical referential is founded in a bibliography approaching the themes of verticalization, (re)production of space, process of urbanization, segregation and vertical cities. The readings have founded the empiric research, which took place in two ways: a documental research and a field research. The former consisted in a survey of the Syllabus Books of the City of João Pessoa for the conceded licenses to building and demolition in the studied area, with the objective of identifying, in the studied period, the (re)production of space and the verticalization. The latter took place effectively in the research field, with lot-by-lot and block-by-block survey of the multi-storey buildings. With the data obtained in the field it is possible to compare reality with what is in the organization responsible for the management of the city and to elaborate maps of the use of space and of verticalization. Thus, we have as a result the morphological analysis of the quarter and a diagnosis of the process of verticalization in Manaíra. The research finds that even if there is a larger number of unifamiliar buildings, there is a continuous growth of vertical buildings, as well as the dismemberment of lots for this kind of edification. Manaíra has a strong tendency to become a vertical quarter.
