This thesis explores the dynamics of helplessness, jouissance, and the uncanny (Das Unheimliche) in the formation of subjectivity and psychological suffering, drawing from the psychoanalytic perspectives of Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan, alongside considerations of the theme of homoeroticism. The study focuses on the novel Berkeley in Bellagio by João Gilberto Noll (2003), elucidating how these phenomena are mediated by social and cultural structures, and how they contribute to the narrator's fragmented identity as a subject of the unconscious, individual defense mechanisms, and the expression of desire. The primary objective of this investigation is to examine the manifestations of helplessness, jouissance, the uncanny, and homoerotic desire in the novel's narrator-character. The research methodology integrates literary analysis with psychoanalytic theory, utilizing key concepts from the works of Freud (1919/2019; 1926/2014a), Lacan (1962-1963/2005), and Safatle (2016; 2020) to interpret the narrative experiences of the novel. Through the analyses conducted, it becomes evident that the narrator-protagonist's encounters, characterized by deterritorialization, helplessness, and conflicts with cultural norms, offer insights into the dynamics of psychic suffering and identity formation in contexts of marginalization and resilience.
