Resumo: This dissertation aims to give visibility to the continuity of ancient rhetoric and poetic genres - anecdote, apologue, dialogue, epigram, obituary and epistle - in the Brazilian Imperial age, as well as to seek rebuilding an intense writing and genre-publishing experience that was localized in the province of Paraíba, but transcended to provinces in the whole country, based on the examination of procedures described and applied by literacy conventions in effect at the term under discussion (PÉCORA, 2001). Taking into consideration that, in the 19th century, newspapers were the main medium of circulation of the written word and of dissemination of the literary genre, and also considering that these structures were disregarded by many literary historiographers, who considered them inferior (BARBOSA, 2007), we used as source a number of newspapers from Paraíba, such as A Ordem (1849; 1850), A Estrela (1860), A Regeneração (1861; 1862), O Publicador (1864 to 1869), Eco Escolástico (1877), O Liberal Paraibano (1882; 1883), and Gazeta do Sertão (1888). We reflected upon our corpus, that is, the aforementioned genres, as conventional and historical determinations constitutive of the truthful meanings of each one of these writings, that also functioned as a "laboratory" in the construction of small fictional narratives and proses, in which the readers-writers experienced and tested the language. Therefore, the observation of the requirements/characteristics of the genre – as prescribed by historiographers at the time – is of our interest; the identification of strategies for their release, and what resulted from the tension established among the requirements of the medium, the demands of the genre and the rhetoric education of the period. The study is based on Barbosa (2007). It is methodologically based on Cultural History assumptions by Barbosa (2010), Burke (2008), Chartier (1991; 2002; 2010), and Pesavento (2008). And it follows the trails and approaches directed by Barbosa (2007), Certeau (2013), Chartier (1998), D.F. McKenzie (2004), and Pécora, (2001; 2005) towards the importance given to reading practices and to the materiality of texts. Considering the contextual analysis, we used the manuals of Blair ([1783] 1784), Carvalho (1851a, 1856), Faria (1850), Freire (1823), Gama (1846), Honorato (1861; 1879), Mello Moraes (1856), Pinheiro (1862; 1885), Quintiliano (2015), Vapereau (1876), Velho da Silva (1882), among others, in relation to the cultural practices related to the newspaper literary medium. To accomplish this research, we consulted the electronic files of the project Jornais e Folhetins Literários da Paraíba no século 19, from the Hemeroteca Digital of the Biblioteca Nacional and the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Paraibano – IHGP, to establish our sources and, then, to the corpus of cataloged writings.
