Sua capital era um lugar que, apesar dos discursos de progresso e civilidade, protagonizava dramas sociais, perceptíveis em moradias improvisadas, epidemias que se prolongavam, exploração sexual de adolescentes e tipos de trabalho realizados em condições precárias. Ambientada nesse contexto, a obra literária de Jorge Amado, romancista baiano, tornou-se uma importante fonte histórica para se analisar as formas de viver, de sentir e reagir elaboradas por pessoas cujas vidas estavam atravessadas por essa desigualdade social e dilemas existenciais. Se havia gente pobre tentando encontrar respostas para as adversidades que caracterizavam suas experiências de vida, associando-as à questão de como deveriam interpretar o próprio destino, havia, de outro modo, homens com alguma posse econômica ou inserção social mais privilegiada, reivindicando a necessidade de debater o significado da felicidade e da infelicidade, da tragédia de não encontrarem a satisfação para viver. Os romances Jubiabá e O País do Carnaval, publicados por Jorge Amado, respectivamente, em 1935 e 1931, apresentam-se como documentos históricos para compreendermos como tais sujeitos, representando diferentes cenas daquela Bahia, elaboraram concepções de vida. Ou seja, como expressavam sentimentos humanos a partir das relações que estabeleciam e, por fim, como reagiam, com atitudes e pensamentos, diante dos acontecimentos diários, fossem eles previstos ou resultado do acaso. O objetivo desta pesquisa é perceber como esses romances possibilitam à historiografia notar as sensibilidades de uma época, a subjetividade humana de um dado contexto histórico, bem como as aspirações de homens e mulheres tecidas em meio ao turbilhão da modernidade.Early 20th century Bahia is marked by historical change and permanence. In spite of progress and civility discourses, the capital was a place of social struggle, as witnessed by makeshift housing, continued epidemics, underaged prostitution and precarious work. In this context, the literary work of Bahian novelist Jorge Amado has become an important historical source for analysing the modes of living, feeling and reacting elaborated by people who have been affected by social inequality and existential dilemmas. On the one hand, there were poor people trying to find answers for adversities that characterized their life experiences, relating it to the question of how to interpret their own destiny; on the other hand, there were men of a somewhat better social condition pointing the necessity of debating the meaning of happiness and unhappiness, of the tragedy of not finding satisfaction in life. Amado’s novels Juiabá (1935) and O País do Carnaval (1931) portrait different scenes of early 20th century Bahia and therefore appear as important historical documents for understanding these subjects and how they elaborate life conceptions; that is, how they expressed human feelings and how they reacted, with thoughts and actions, to both planned and random daily events.
