Para isso, realizei observações etnográficas durante um ano, entrevistei treze moradores, analisei dados demográficos e textos jornalísticos sobre o bairro. A hipótese principal é a de que as estratégias de segurança utilizadas estão relacionadas às condições socioeconômicas dos habitantes e às características do espaço urbano. Constatando as distinções dessas variáveis de acordo com as diferentes áreas do bairro, realizei o recorte analítico de quatro zonas espacialmente delimitadas, objetivando explicar o problema da produção de segurança por meio de seus distintos aspectos. Inicialmente, busquei entender como as percepções positivas e negativas sobre a região são resultados e, ao mesmo tempo, elementos constituintes das configurações do espaço urbano. Em seguida, analisei separadamente as quatro estratégias securitárias utilizadas pelos moradores: a contratação de agentes formais e informais de vigilância – e seus procedimentos de legitimação –, o uso de obstáculos físicos contra invasões e assaltos, a constituição de redes de proteção espontâneas e, por fim, o uso de tramas securitárias. Ao final, relacionei essas estratégias às quatro zonas, ambicionando a construção de um modelo explicativo das suas lógicas securitárias.CNPqThe aim of this study is to investigate the non-state forms of security production in the neighborhood of Várzea, part of the west zone of the city of Recife. For this purpose, I used an ethnographic approach and the results of thirteen semi-structured interviews conducted with its residents. The main hypothesis is that the security strategies used are related to the socioeconomic conditions of the inhabitants and to the characteristics of the urban space. Noting the distinctions of these variables according to the different areas of the neighborhood, I proposed an analytical cut of four spatially delimited zones, aiming to understand and explain the problem of security production through its different aspects. Initially, I sought to understand how positive and negative perceptions about the region are results and, at the same time, elements that constitute the configurations of the urban space. Then, I analyzed separately the four security strategies used by residents: the hiring of formal and informal surveillance agents - and their legitimation procedures -, the use of physical obstacles against invasions and assaults, the constitution of spontaneous safety nets and, finally, the use of security fabrications.
