Em países em desenvolvimento, as condições de baixa renda acentuam a necessidade do uso dos recursos florestais e atividades como a pecuária extensiva, que quando mal manejada pode causar impactos negativos no ecossistema. A herbivoria exercida por grandes mamíferos, selvagens ou domesticados, exerce papel chave na estrutura da vegetação e biodiversidade e hoje alguns ecossistemas como a Caatinga possuem animais domésticos como os principais grandes herbívoros. Assim, é razoável pensar que, na Caatinga, os 8,6 milhões de caprinos devem exercer fortes pressões e impactos sobre a comunidade vegetal e apresentar padrão de uso da paisagem intimamente ligado a presença humana. Testamos a hipótese de que o uso de hábitat de caprinos na Caatinga é influenciado pela distância aos assentamentos humanos e/ou dependente do estágio de perturbação da vegetação. Realizamos entrevistas com os moradores do Parque Nacional do Catimbau para obter informações da caprinocultura e rastreamos 10 caprinos domésticos com uso de GPS datalogger. Também geramos modelos de ocupação do hábitat. Os caprinos apresentaram área de vida média de 97,7 ± 30,01 ha, com forrageio próximo das casas e preferencialmente em áreas abertas com vegetação menos densa. Acreditamos que as áreas abertas representam um atrativo aos caprinos principalmente por constituírem áreas com maior facilidade de locomoção e abundância de alimento palatável. Esse padrão de forrageio observado sugere uma forte associação com áreas fragmentadas e exploradas por outras atividades humanas. Com isso, em condições de sobrepastejo, caprinos podem desempenhar um importante papel na secundarização da Caatinga. Estimamos pelo modelo que 41% da área do Parque seja adequada ao forrageio, realizada por caprinos em uma densidade estimada de 4,6/km² (11,3/km² quando consideramos apenas a área modelada), valores abaixo de algumas outras regiões semiáridas. A baixa densidade resultar da grande seca nos últimos anos na região norte e nordeste do Brasil. Apesar da baixa densidade e extensão do uso do habitat, a região oriental do Parque, mais populosa, apresenta um padrão onde o uso da terra por caprinos é mais intenso e nos parece claro que o uso da paisagem é intenso apenas em locais com alta densidade humana. Além do aspecto ecológico, a questão socioeconômica deve ser considerada. A caprinocultura é parte da cultura regional, representando um significativo alívio da pobreza. A busca por melhores planos de controle de impacto de caprinos deve considerar o manejo de baixas densidades desses animais e seus efeitos positivos na manutenção da estrutura e biodiversidade, como discutido em outros locais pelo mundo.CNPqSeasonally Dry Tropical Forests are severely threatened and used by men. In developing countries, the poor conditions stress the need for the use of forest resources and activities such as extensive livestock farming and when badly managed can cause negative impacts on the ecosystem. The herbivory exerted by large mammals, wild or domesticated, plays a key role in the vegetation structure and biodiversity and today some ecosystems such as Caatinga have domestic animals as the main large herbivores. Thus, it is reasonable to think that in the Caatinga the 8.6 million goats must exert strong pressures and impacts on plant community and may have a land use pattern closely linked to human presence. We tested the hypothesis that the habitat use by goats in the Caatinga is influenced by the distance to human settlements and/or dependent on the vegetation disturbance stage. We interviewed the residents of Catimbau National Park to obtain information from goat livestock culture and tracked 10 domestic goats using a GPS datalogger. We also generate habitat occupancy models. The goats had an average living area of 97.7 ± 30.01 ha, with foraging close to homes and preferably in open areas with less dense vegetation. We believe that the open areas represent an attractive habitat for goats mainly because they constitute areas with greater ease of movement and plenty of palatable food. The observed foraging pattern suggests a strong association with fragmented areas and exploited by other human activities. Thus, in conditions of overgrazing, goats can play an important role in secondarization of the Caatinga. We estimate by the model that 41% of the Park area is suitable for foraging by goats, that are in an estimated density of 4.6 / km² (11.3 / km² when we consider only the modelled area), values below some other semi-arid regions. The low density may result of drought in recent years in the north and northeast of Brazil. Despite the low density and extent of habitat use, the eastern region of the park, most populous, shows a pattern where the use of land for goats is more intense and seems clear to us that the use of the landscape is strong only in places with high density human. Besides the ecological aspect, socioeconomic issue should be considered. The goat is part of the regional culture, representing a significant poverty alleviation.
