O corpus de análise foi composto pelos filmes de longa-metragem Orly (Angela Schanelec, 2011) e Fênix (Phoenix, Christian Petzold, 2014) e os abordamos com o objetivo de examinar a manifestação estética de suas atmosferas, a fim de identificar os elementos que as evocavam, bem como as funções desempenhadas nas narrativas fílmicas. O referencial teórico que subsidiou nossas análises e reflexões adveio, sobretudo, do trabalho do professor e crítico literário alemão Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht, tanto com o resgate do conceito de Stimmung, associado ao sentido metafórico do termo atmosfera, quanto com o aporte da teoria das Materialidades da Comunicação. Recorremos também às contribuições da pesquisadora portuguesa Ines Gil, que propôs dois tipos de atmosferas fílmicas: dramáticas e plásticas. O percurso da pesquisa nos conduziu à compreensão de que as atmosferas fílmicas, no âmbito das filmografias de ambos os cineastas estudados, não obedeciam a padrões rígidos de manifestação estética, devido, principalmente, aos seguintes motivos: primeiro, foram observadas passagens em que um elemento (uma canção, por exemplo) evocava atmosferas distintas, em momentos diferentes de um mesmo filme. Segundo, percebeu-se também o inverso, isto é, que uma mesma atmosfera resultava da operação de diferentes elementos narrativos (dentro de um mesmo filme). Sendo assim, concluiu-se que a manifestação das atmosferas fílmicas era passível de ser descrita a partir da materialidade dos filmes, de ser eventualmente classificada, mas, dificilmente, suscetível de ser enquadrada em esquemas excessivamente rígidos de operação, sob pena de não conseguirmos perceber a sua função narrativa, ou, ainda, de não conseguirmos ver em busca de Stimmung.CAPESThis doctoral thesis presents and discusses the results of a research on the filmic atmosphere in instances of the narrative films of Angela Schanelec and Christian Petzold, who integrate the 1st generation of the Berlin School. The corpus of this analysis was formed by the feature films Orly (Angela Schanelec, 2011) and Phoenix (Christian Petzold, 2014), which we approached to examine the aesthetic manifestations of their atmospheres, to identify the elements that evoked them, as well as the roles they played in the film narratives. The theoretical framework for our analyses and reflections is based mainly on the work of German professor and literary theorist Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht, by using both the concept of Stimmung, associated with the metaphoric sense of the term atmosphere, and the theory of Materiality of Communication. We have also used the contributions of Portuguese researcher Ines Gil, namely her proposition of two types of filmic atmospheres: dramatic and plastic. The development of our study led us to comprehend that the filmic atmospheres, in the filmography of the two filmmakers covered in our study, did not comply with the rigid standards of aesthetic manifestation, mainly due to the following reasons: first, we observed passages in which one element (a song, for example) conveyed distinct atmospheres in different moments of one movie. Second, we also noticed the opposite, that is, that one single atmosphere resulted from the operation of different narrative elements (in a single film).
