Defesa: Curitiba,02/09/2013Bibliografia: fls. 111-122Resumo: Este estudo investiga a relação que se expõe no livro Os Sertões, de Euclides da Cunha, entre tempo e a historicidade atribuída ao sertão e ao sertanejo. Nesta obra, lançada em 1902, que se apresenta como um estudo da Campanha de Canudos postula-se, desde o início, uma distância temporal entre o narrador letrado e os tipos populares, que foram observados na ocasião da guerra. Conforme o autor, os sertanejos figurariam como pertencentes ao passado, espécimes do atavismo histórico, preservados no interior que logo seriam suplantados pela marcha da civilização. Portanto, desde cedo o autor demonstra uma consciência histórica, a qual o permite discorrer sobre a historicidade dos habitantes do sertão. Destarte, representa o mundo rural em oposição ao mundo urbano, e sobretudo o tempo passado em oposição ao tempo presente. Existe, pois, uma articulação da consciência histórica, pela qual Euclides da Cunha, projeta o sertão e seu homem para o passado, mesmo que presentes. Põe-se em causa, nesta pesquisa, o propósito de tal consciência histórica, a qual define uma historicidade própria ao narrador e a sua matéria narrada. A percepção do tempo é responsável pela maneira como Euclides representa o seu sertão. Com o suporte teórico da teoria da história de Jörn Rüsen, a historicidade, manifesta no livro de Euclides da Cunha pode ser explicada.Abstract: This study sought to investigate the relationship between time and history in the book Rebellion in the Backland, by Euclides da Cunha. In this work published in 1902, which pretend to be an essay about the Canudos' Campaign, he asseverates since the beginning a temporal distance between the literary narrator and the popular folks, which were seem in the occasion of the war. As the author says the sertanejos were types of the past, representing the historical atavism that had preserved in the backlands, where the march of the civilization would supplant them by force. Hence, the author demonstrates a historical consciousness that permits him to write about the historicity of the habitants of the backlands. Thus, he represents the rural world in opposition to the urban world, and above all the past time in opposition to the present time. A use of the historical consciousness projects the backlands and its folks to the past present. This research questions this historical consciousness, which defines a historicity to the narrator and another to the narrated. The perception of the experience of time must be the responsible of the means by which Euclides da Cunha represent the backlands.
