Produziu diversas obras, sendo as mais influentes O Caminho da Servidão (1944), Os Fundamentos da Liberdade (1960) e os três volumes de Direito, Legislação e Liberdade (1973, 1976 e 1979). Além das obras foi condecorado com o Prêmio Nobel de Economia em 1974. Hayek tinha como convicção da defesa do livre mercado, o anticomunismo e a crítica ferrenha à intervenção estatal na Economia. Todo esse conjunto transformou Hayek em um dos principais teóricos e ideólogos do neoliberalismo. Considerando a influência do economista austríaco e a difusão mundial de seu pensamento e obras, o enfoque desta pesquisa concentra-se em como as ideias de Hayek chegaram ao Brasil. A entrada não é linear e apresentou avanços e desacelerações ao longo das décadas que engloba o recorte temporal analisado (1944-1994). O conjunto de fontes utilizado para elucidar a problemática da pesquisa vai desde as obras de Hayek traduzidas para o português, englobando as três principais citadas acima, passando por recortes jornalísticos que cobriram as viagens de Hayek ao Brasil em 1957 e entre 1977 e 1981, até cartas trocadas pelo economista e o empresário brasileiro Henry Maksoud, que bancou as viagens do austríaco ao Brasil e foi responsável pela tradução das obras Os Fundamentos da Liberdade e Direito, Legislação e Liberdade para o português nos anos 1980. Também faz parte do rol de fontes cartas trocadas por Hayek e o neoliberal brasileiro Eugênio Gudin antes da viagem de 1957 ao Rio de Janeiro. Diante da grande variedade de fontes, que engloba cartas, imprensa e livros, metodologicamente a pesquisa dividiu o trabalho em quatro capítulos. No primeiro é feita uma revisão teórica e historiográfica do pensamento neoliberal brasileiro desde a década de 1930 até o período posterior à ditadura militar brasileira, identificando os principais economistas e teóricos sobre o assunto. Nesse primeiro capítulo também é problematizada as consequências sociais das políticas neoliberais. Para isso foi dividido o neoliberalismo em três frentes, sendo a doutrina, o movimento e a ação política. No segundo capítulo, adentrando no objeto principal da pesquisa, abordo o impacto da obra O Caminho da Servidão no Brasil, abrangendo as diversas edições, traduções, palestras, coberturas jornalísticas, publicidade do livro e cartas de Hayek que de alguma forma apontam para as principais teses de O Caminho da Servidão, que é a crítica que a intervenção estatal na economia levaria as nações que a adotassem ao totalitarismo. Há também forte anticomunismo na narrativa de O Caminho da Servidão. O terceiro capítulo investiga as transformações do pensamento de Hayek, em que nas obras Os Fundamentos da Liberdade e Direito, Legislação e Liberdade, o foco do anticomunismo tenha mudado para a crítica ao Estado de Bem-Estar Social. Nesse capítulo discuto como o pensamento de Hayek pode ser nocivo ao questionar direitos fundamentais como a precarização da saúde, a passagem do trabalho assalariado para a ilusão do sujeito empreendedor de sucesso, finalizando com o modelo de democracia limitada de Hayek. No quarto e último capítulo, são tratados temas diversos derivados dos capítulos anteriores e de posicionamentos de Hayek nas suas viagens ao Brasil, finalizando com as reportagens que questionavam a validade de suas principais teorias, por fim discuto como Hayek foi um homem de ideias solitárias. Na conclusão apresento como as ideias de Hayek adentraram no Brasil em fluxos que eu chamo de ondas ou gradientes.Abstract: Friedrich August von Hayek was one of the most influential representatives of the Austrian School of Economics and a founding member of the Mont Pèlerin Society in 1947. He produced several works, the most influential being The Road to Serfdom (1944), The Constitution of Liberty (1960) and the three volumes of Law, Legislation and Liberty (1973, 1976 and 1979). In addition to his works, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1974. Hayek was convinced of the defense of the free market, anti-communism and a fierce criticism of state intervention in the economy. All this set turned Hayek into one of the main theorists and ideologues of neoliberalism. Considering the influence of the Austrian economist and the worldwide diffusion of his thought and works, the focus of this research is on how Hayek's ideas arrived in Brazil. The entry is not linear, and presented advances and decelerations over the decades that encompasses the time frame analyzed (1944-1994). The set of sources used to elucidate the research problem ranges from Hayek's works translated into Portuguese, encompassing the three main ones mentioned above, through journalistic clippings that covered Hayek's trips to Brazil in 1957 and between 1977 and 1981, to letters exchanged by the economist and Brazilian businessman Henry Maksoud, who paid for the Austrian's trips to Brazil and was responsible for translating the works The Constitution of Liberty and Law, Legislation and Liberty into Portuguese in the 1980s letters exchanged by Hayek and the Brazilian neoliberal Eugênio Gudin before the 1957 trip to Rio de Janeiro. Given the wide variety of sources, which includes letters, press and books, methodologically the research divided the work into four chapters. The first presents a theoretical and historiographical review of Brazilian neoliberal thinking from the 1930s to the period after the Brazilian military dictatorship, identifying the main economists and theorists on the subject. This first chapter also discusses the social consequences of neoliberal policies. For this, neoliberalism was divided into three fronts, namely doctrine, movement and political action. In the second chapter, going into the main object of the research, I approach the impact of the work The Road of Serfdom in Brazil, covering the different editions, translations, lectures, journalistic coverage, publicity of the book and Hayek's letters that somehow point to the main theses of The Road to Serfdom, which is the criticism that state intervention in the economy would lead nations that adopted it to totalitarianism. There is also strong anti-communism in the narrative of The Road to Serfdom. The third chapter investigates the transformations of Hayek's thought, in which in the works The Constitution of Liberty and Law, Legislation and Liberty, the focus of anticommunism has changed to a critique of the Welfare State. In this chapter I discuss how Hayek's thinking can be harmful when questioning fundamental rights such as the precariousness of health, the passage from salaried work to the illusion of the successful entrepreneur, ending with Hayek's model of limited democracy. In the fourth and last chapter, several themes derived from previous chapters and from Hayek's positions on his trips to Brazil are dealt with, ending with the reports that questioned the validity of his main theories, finally I discuss how Hayek was a man of solitary ideas.
