Resumo: This research analyzes Hannah Arendt's reflection on the phenomenon of "banality of evil", the relationship between personal and collective responsibility and the bond between thought and morality that is expressed in the exercise of critical reasoning. We elucidate how totalitarian crimes challenged the understanding and traditional patterns of moral judgment, claiming a problematization of the traditional conception of evil as derived from an evil will, evidencing the superficial character of evil when practiced by the inability to think and to judge, by the failure of common sense and by unthinking obedience. Evil becomes banal when performed by men who have not even decided to carry them out and only obey the rules previously established in the regime. We investigate the author's theoretical effort to make thought relevant to the constitution and preservation of the common world, demonstrating how important the exercise of thought and the ability to judge are in the sphere of human affairs.

Elucidamos o modo como os crimes totalitários desafiaram a compreensão e os padrões tradicionais de julgamento moral, reivindicando uma problematização da tradicional concepção do mal como derivado de uma vontade má, evidenciando o caráter superficial do mal quando praticado pela incapacidade de pensar e julgar, pela falência do senso comum e pela obediência irrefletida. O mal se torna banal quando realizado por homens que nem sequer decidiram realizá-lo e apenas obedecem a regras previamente estabelecidas no regime.
