Os labirintos discursivos da modernidade nos cronotopos ficcionais de Jorge Luís Borges

It is impossible to talk about Jorge Luis Borges without mentioning three words: time, mirrors and labyrinths, because the writer not only works with these elements in his works, in a fantastic way, but also incorporates the discussions that these elements bring to the reading of his time, from a play with space-time at the heart of his tales. In this articulation between form, material and content brought from his historical context, the expansion of the real duplicates the geographical references and expands them, in search of an understanding of his own time. The general objective of this thesis is to investigate the discursive labyrinths of modernity in the fictional chronotopes of Borges narratives to understand how these procedures and exchanges, between the real and the fictional, are carried out and how they are at times articulated with the discourses related to the process of representation of Argentine subjects in the midst of modernization in Latin America. To achieve this goal, the discussions carried out by Mikhail Bakhtin about aesthetics and literature are used as a methodological framework, focusing on the essays “The problem of content, material and form in verbal art”, in the essay collection titled Art and Answerability and in his reflections on space-time in the literary work found in the essay Forms of Time and Chronotope in the Novel. In this investigation, which combines an aesthetic and historical view of production, discussions about the context of Latin Americain the 20th century are prompted by Octavio Paz (2014), Erik Hobsbawn (2018) and Marshall Berman (2007), in addition to debates on fantastic forms from Tzvetan Todorov (1981), Roger Caillois (1966) and Ana Luiza Silva Camarani (2014) and the theoretical framework on the work of Borges, through Daniel Balderston (1993), María Barrenechea (1984), Emir Rodriguez Monegal (1980), Júlio Pimentel Pinto (1998) and Beatriz Sarlo (2003). By bringing thes authors, we aimed to understand the composition of fictional chronotopes based on three fundamental short stories for the composition of the book Ficciones (1944), namely “Tlön, Uqbar, Orbius tertius”, “Pierre Menard, autor del Quijote” and “Funes, el memorioso”. Thus, we understood, how the refraction of certain discourses, in Borges’creation of fictional-chronotopes, bring reflections on the Argentine cultural memory and on the discursive ambivalence present in the subjects of/in modernity.
