A prática do aleitamento materno exclusivo na concepção de mulheres no interior do Rio Grande do Norte

Introduction: Exclusive Breastfeeding (EBF) is one of the public health priorities in Brazil because it provides adequate nutrition to children and protection against allergies and infections. Objectives: The general objective of the investigation was to analyze the conception of women about the practice of EBF in a municipality in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte. And its specific objectives: to know the main factors that lead to the failure of this practice; identify the main social networks to support the EBF; and understand the knowledge and fears about the exclusive breastfeeding process. Methodology: This is an exploratory, descriptive, comprehensive, interpretative study, with a qualitative approach, carried out in a municipality in northeastern Brazil. The participants were 16 women registered in the Family Health Strategy. Data collection, carried out in mid-2019, occurred through a focus group. A thematic content analysis was performed with the support of the IRAMUTEQ software. Results: The reasons for abandonment of EBF included factors such as: persistent crying of the child; judgment on the quality and quantity of breast milk; weakened family support network; correct grip difficulty for feeding; early return of the mother to work; and lack of support from health professionals. The local social networks of support identified were: spouse, partner, mothers, fathers, in-laws, uncles, siblings, friends, neighbors and health professionals. We highlight the ambiguity of meanings that permeate perceptions about EBF, evidencing a contrast between the duty and pleasure of breastfeeding, with pain and the difficulties of sustaining this practice. Conclusions: the authors emphasized the importance of knowledge about local social networks to support EBF during prenatal care, in order to stimulate the role of mothers and their social networks in programs to encourage the valorization of women to strengthen the process of motherhood. The study contributed to the creation of spaces for discussion and listening to these women in the scope of health services.
