A narrativa sobre o mar: o universo marítimo ficcional de Moacir Costa Lopes

No Brazilian novelist has so far elected a nautical theme as the centre of his literary universe like writer Moacir Costa Lopes, from the state of Ceará. Through the depiction of sailors’ lives at sea, and the portrayal of the hardships and challenges faced by them, Lopes offers a representation of the broader social context in which they live. Furthermore, his novels are characterised by the representation of a distinct historical context, and make reference to such events as the Second World War, the Revolt of the Lash, and the Spanish Flu, and to places like the cities of Natal and Recife during the War. Among the distinctive features of Lopes’s novels are: their strong social overtones; their unusual structure; the portrayal of events in a non-chronological order; the use of several narrative points of view; the depiction of characters who manifest typified and complex traits; the representation of a social and psychological environment which influences the characters’ lives; the depiction of a fantastic atmosphere; and the use of symbolic language. In this research, our aim is to investigate two narratives which are set on or near the sea, and are very representative of Lopes’s oeuvre: his first novel Maria de Cada Porto (1959), and his firth novel Belona, Latitude Noite (1968). Our method of analysis is based on the dialectically integrated criticism proposed by Antonio Candido (2006), who considers the formal and social dimensions as integrating the same analytical process. This study offers a thorough investigation of the social context represented in the nautical universe of Lopes’ fiction. We will examine the ways in which the wider social context in Brazil is assimilated into the structure of the novels, becoming part of a compositional whole.
