Resumo: | Corrections officers are constantly exposed to situations of violence and threats, which are associated to the emergence of occupational illnesses such as Common Mental Disorders/CMD and abusive/dependent consumption of psychoactive substances. Because of this, it was aimed to investigate the relationship between work and mental health among corrections officers from the state of Rio Grande do Norte, a category little investigated in academic scope. The research was developed in two stages. The stage 1 consisted in mapping the incidence of CMD and drugconsumption pattern with 403 corrections officers out of 902 total workers. We used the SelfReporting Questionnaire/SRQ-20, ASSIST and social-demographic questionnaire as methodological tools. It was found an incidence of 23,57% of suspect cases of CMD and abusive/dependent consumption of tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, amphetamine, inhalant and hypnotic, which implies concern and care. The stage 2 consisted in visitations to the prison units whose agents showed higher indications of CMD and abusive/dependent drug consumption, aiming to identify aspects related to the problems mapped in the previous stage. Semi-structured interviews were realized with 6 managers, 19 agents and 9 relatives who agreed to participate. It was detected an evident social devaluation of the profession, which associated to the precarious work conditions and the particularities of the process and work organization, make these workers vulnerable in the subjective (daily dynamics that leads to suffering), family (due to frightening work routine), work-related (lack of control, sense and autonomy) and programmatic (low visibility in the scope of public policies) dimensions. This research sought to contribute with the critical debate about the Brazilian Prison System through analyses regarding incarceration, considering its configurations and effects on the very State agent who is found in the same condition as the convict. Lastly, we reaffirm that such system is so perverse that it sickens and condemns everyone, especially those who work in it. |

BrasilUFRNPROGRAMA DE PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO EM PSICOLOGIADimenstein, Magda Diniz BezerraFigueiro, Rafael de AlbuquerqueAlves Filho, AntonioLima, Fellipe CoelhoMacedo, João Paulo SalesRonzani, TelmoLima, Ana Izabel Oliveira2019-01-14T20:25:51Z2019-01-14T20:25:51Z2017-08-31info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/doctoralThesisapplication/pdfLIMA, Ana Izabel Oliveira.
