Resumo: Given that dreams may play an important role in emotional regulation, this study sought to investigate whether increased dream recall could influence this process. To ascertain this association, 41 individuals (19 women) aged between 18 and 35 years were recruited after agreeing to participate in the study. Participants completed sociodemographic, clinical, and dream recall frequency data forms and completed the Cognitive Emotional Regulation Experiment (CERT). They were then divided into two groups: in the experimental group (G1, n = 21), participants completed a Dream Diary for 14 days to stimulate an increase in dream recall frequency (DRF). During the CERT, the Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM), functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and galvanic skin conductance (RGP) were used to monitor the participants' emotional response. Statistical analysis used the Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon tests, with p-values < 0.05. The results presented indicate that the use of dream journals contributed to an increase in RSF in the experimental group, although sleep journals also had some effect on this variable in the control group. The results regarding emotional regulation (SAM) and galvanic skin response (RGP) converge to similar results, indicating a lack of significant difference between groups of RGP variation and SAM indices between experiments. fNIRS data, however, demonstrated a significant difference between groups of theta variation between experiments. The different results obtained point to the need for further studies on this topic. It is recommended that future research use: (a) a passive control group, to avoid any influence of journals on RSF; (b) positive images, as a counterpoint to negative images, to increase the contrast between the valences and excitation potential of the stimuli; (c) short channels, to obtain a better fNIRS signal; (d) audio-recorded journals, in order to decrease the dropout rate; e) recruiting more participants to obtain a larger N, and thus, obtain a sample with greater statistical power.
