Resumo: Long-term care institutions are places to welcome elderly people who are unable to remain under the care of family members or on their own, under the responsibility of a multidisciplinary team. The change in environment, together with the lack of material and human resources, the health condition of the elderly, makes the environment conducive to the occurrence of damage, aggression and mistreatment of the institutionalized elderly. Therefore, this work aimed to analyze the prevalence of abuse among elderly people living in long-term care institutions, through metaanalysis of data extracted from studies evaluated through a systematic review. This is a systematic review with meta-analysis carried out in the databases SCIELO, CINHAL, Web Of Science, PUBMED, EMBASE, LILACS, BDENF and SCOPUS. The study was registered on the platform in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO), which generated registration number CRD4202456789. The inclusion criteria were original articles published in full with free access, works that had as their object of study abuse against the elderly and those residing in long-term institutions for the elderly or other definitions. The exclusion criteria were works that had no correlation with the theme, which were other reviews (integrative, narrative, systematic, Scope), editorial documents, letters to the reader, theses and dissertations, as well as course completion works, chapters book, among other documents that belong to gray literature. The selected studies underwent an analysis following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) checklist to be used in writing this work. The search for works using combinations of descriptors resulted in a total of 6,752 articles in the databases distributed in: 1,308 in PUBMED, 397 in Web Of Sicience, 1,880 in EMBASE, 1,433 in PsycINFO, 1,228 in LILACS, 361 in BDENF, 18 at SCOPUS and 100 at SCIELO. In the end, after reading the title, abstract and in full, only 9 studies made up the sample of this work. Through the studies, it was observed that the factors that cause abuse in institutionalized elderly people were related to the professionals' workload, fewer studies on geriatric care, professional exhaustion, as well as those elderly people who had greater cognitive impairment, women and those with chronic diseases. Psychological abuse was the most frequent among the elderly, followed by physical abuse, neglect, property and sexual abuse. Therefore, professionals and managers of institutions need to be willing to report the types of abuse suffered by the elderly to the competent bodies to resolve the problem, as well as develop public policies aimed at ensuring the rights of institutionalized elderly people.
