The main objective of this work is to identify the direct and indirect effects of return migration in the Northeast region, categorized by the type of return, at the level of the Metropolitan Region or Interior, and by categories of municipalities defined based on population size. Three types of return were defined for this study: the first refers to return to the birth municipality, the second to return to the birth state (excluding those returning to the birth municipality), and the third is the return to the Northeast region, in municipalities and states different from the birthplace. In addition to the main objective, the study will analyze how the direct and indirect effects of return migration affect demographic dynamics, considering the analysis of gender ratio and age structure of migration effects in spatial divisions and by type of return. This dissertation comprises three chapters. Chapter 1 will be dedicated to the literature review on internal migration in Brazil, with a focus on migration to and from the Northeast region between 1980 and 2010, and a brief contextualization of return migration and its effects. Chapter 2 will present the data and methodology used. In Chapter 3, a general analysis of the direct and indirect type 2 effects of migration at the Northeast level will be presented, highlighting the importance of return migration in the total immigrant population of the decade. Analyses will be conducted at the level of the Metropolitan Region and Interior, and within categories of municipalities, presenting differences in age and relationship. From the results of this dissertation, it is observed that returnees accounted for 53.38% of the total immigrants, and non-native immigrants who accompanied their return accounted for 18.02%. The majority of return migrants settled in municipalities (67.84%) or in their birth states (26.59%), while the remaining (5.57%) settled outside the birth region. Regarding spatial divisions, the direct and indirect effects were more pronounced in Metropolitan Regions (above 50%) and in municipalities with up to 50 thousand inhabitants, with 51.64% for returns to the birth municipality, 40.28% to the birth state, and 40.53% to the Northeast region.
