Resumo: | There is no consensus on a single concept of youth, however, currently, young people are conceived as subjects of law and important social actors within contemporary society. In the last few years, Brazilian youth has gained attention after having been protagonists in several mobilizations and demonstrations, from marches in public spaces to the occupation of public schools, acting as a conjunction of actors which challenge the status quo. Thus, this thesis aims to: discuss the praxis of youth social movements in Brazil, considering their political practice and, more specifically, analyzing how this political practice contributes to the building of an emancipatory program for youth. To achieve these goals, we performed eight (8) semi-structured interviews with representatives from the national coordination bodies of a few youth social movements, pointing towards the understanding and analysis of their structure and organization, as well as their take on the ideas of society transformation and emancipation. In addition to the interviews, we used documents supplied by these movements or available on their websites to further our set of information. The movements investigated were: Levante Popular da Juventude (LPJ), Rua anticapitalista, Pastoral da Juventude (PJ), Pastoral da Juventude Rural (PJR), Pastoral da Juventude do Meio Popular (PJMP) and Fórum Nacional da Juventude Negra (FONAJUNE). These choices had as premises their national recognition – these are nation-wide movements –, as well as the intention to cover a certain range of representation (urban, rural, black youths). With the support of a software for qualitative analysis – QDA Miner – we were able to organize the transcribed interviews and code them, which resulted in 4 different theme axes and 20 codes associated to them. The results suggest that social organization is significant for the activists in these movements and that, in that sense, they believe the youth has a lot more to contribute to the transformation of reality; besides that, we could take notice of new forms of political participation, which diverge from conventional/traditional participation models, even if the latter are still considered important. We also highlight the difficulty young people face in being understood as political subjects – as it can be observed in the high violence, unemployment and low-literacy rates – and that, in its turn, grants that an emancipatory program does not come into effect. We expect to have played a part in advancing the discussion around the political doings of youth social movements, considering not only possible emancipation strategies, but also the way in which they articulate in the hope of breaking ties with the current model of sociability. |
