Resumo: Wild-sage (Varronia curassavica Jaqc) is a native species that occurs in the Mata Atl?ntica region, it is present in the National List of Medicinal Plants of Interest to the Unified Health System (RENISUS, Brazil) and studies have pointed to the pharmacological effects related to essential oil substances extracted from the leaves. The plant's pharmacological action is mainly due to the presence of ?-humulene and ?-caryophyllene sesquiterpenes, which have proven anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-allergic properties. There are no reviews of wild-sage focused on the chemical variability of essential oils, as well as, few studies evaluating the chemical diversity of the species in its natural environment or in collections. This dissertation was divided into two chapters. In the first, a literature review, descriptive and multivariate statistical analysis on the essential oils of the wild-sage herb were carried out, based on a sampling of scientific articles available on the internet. In the second chapter, a field study was carried out from the prospection and collection of the wild-sage plant material in its natural habitat (in situ) in the Regi?o dos Lagos in the Rio de Janeiro State, essential oil extractions and chemical characterizations and nalysis statistics of the data obtained. With the information obtained in this work, it was possible to know the genotypes wild-sage chemical variability and productive potential in situ. This nformation is important for the specialist in plant improvement and the breeding program development, focused on the essential oils productions.

A a??o farmacol?gica da planta deve-se principalmente ? presen?a de sesquiterpenos ?-humuleno e ?-cariofileno, que t?m propriedades anti-inflamat?rias, analg?sicas e antial?rgicas comprovadas. N?o existem trabalhos de revis?o sobre a erva baleeira focados na variabilidade qu?mica dos ?leos essenciais, assim como, s?o poucos os trabalhos avaliando a diversidade qu?mica da esp?cie em seu ambiente natural ou em cole??es. Esta disserta??o foi dividida em dois cap?tulos. No primeiro, foi realizada uma revis?o de literatura e a an?lise estat?stica descritiva e multivariada sobre os ?leos essenciais da erva baleeira, a partir de uma amostragem de artigos cient?ficos dispon?veis na internet. No segundo cap?tulo, foi realizado um estudo de campo a partir da prospec??o e coleta de material vegetal da erva baleeira no seu ambiente natural (in situ) na Regi?o dos Lagos no Estado do Rio de Janeiro, extra??o e caracteriza??o qu?mica dos ?leos essenciais e an?lise estat?stica dos dados obtidos. Com as informa??es obtidas neste trabalho foi poss?vel conhecer a variabilidade qu?mica e o potencial produtivo dos gen?tipos de erva baleeira in situ. description Wild-sage (Varronia curassavica Jaqc) is a native species that occurs in the Mata Atl?ntica region, it is present in the National List of Medicinal Plants of Interest to the Unified Health System (RENISUS, Brazil) and studies have pointed to the pharmacological effects related to essential oil substances extracted from the leaves. The plant's pharmacological action is mainly due to the presence of ?-humulene and ?-caryophyllene sesquiterpenes, which have proven anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-allergic properties. There are no reviews of wild-sage focused on the chemical variability of essential oils, as well as, few studies evaluating the chemical diversity of the species in its natural environment or in collections. This dissertation was divided into two chapters. In the first, a literature review, descriptive and multivariate statistical analysis on the essential oils of the wild-sage herb were carried out, based on a sampling of scientific articles available on the internet. In the second chapter, a field study was carried out from the prospection and collection of the wild-sage plant material in its natural habitat (in situ) in the Regi?o dos Lagos in the Rio de Janeiro State, essential oil extractions and chemical characterizations and nalysis statistics of the data obtained. With the information obtained in this work, it was possible to know the genotypes wild-sage chemical variability and productive potential in situ. This nformation is important for the specialist in plant improvement and the breeding program development, focused on the essential oils productions.
