Resumo: The study aims to investigate the connectivity of an important fishery resource along the southeastern Brazilian coast of (mullet, Mugil liza) between semi-closed coastal systems and the adjacent coastal zone, aiming to provide subsidies for preservation and sustainable use. Two approaches were used to achieve these objectives, which correspond to the two chapters of the Thesis: 1. Morphometry of the Sagittae otolith; 2. Biochemistry of the Sagittae otolith. The fishes were collected along about 612 km, covering the coast of the states of Rio de Jneiro and S?o Paulo, in the following semi-closed systems and in their respective adjacent coastal zones: estuaries of Santos/Guaruj? and proximities of Caraguatatuba/Ilha Bela; bays of Sepetiba/Ilha Grande and Guanabara; and the coastal lagoons of Saquaremma and Maric?. We investigated, through the two approaches, the existence of different population groups throughout the study area, the population connectivity between the systems and the stocks/populations, and the existence of different pattern of individual movements within the different systems (lagoons, bays and estuaries). In the first chapter we tested the existence of different stocks of mullets along the coast of the states of S?o Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Assuming that different morphotypes and/or variations in otolith shape may represent different populations/stocks, we tested the hypothesis that there is more than one Mugil liza stock/population across the study area. For this, we used Fourier elliptical descriptors and morphometric indices to identify variations in the shape of otoliths throughout the study area. A geographical pattern of separation, suggesting the existence of at least two stocks/populations throughout the study area was detected, and the presence of three otolith morphotypes that did not show a clinal distribution pattern was found, suggesting that the study area is a transition area for different stocks / populations of M. liza. In the second chapter, the patterns of movement and use of semi-closed systems and open coastal zone were studied. Assuming that mullets use estuarine systems during the early phase of their life cycle and migrate to the platform as adults, to be part of the migratory/spawning stock of the species. We tested the hypothesis that there is an individual differentiation of use, with some individuals returning to the estuarine environment after spawning and some others individuals do not need to exit estuarine systems to complete their life cycle. For this, the elemental strontium and barium profiles of the mullets captured within the main estuarine systems and respective coastal zone sites were evaluated. Sr concentrations along the nucleus-edge (life history) and nucleus (birth areas) axis suggest distinct populations / stocks and birth areas in both the adjacent platform and the estuarine region. Three movement profiles were identified, with the most common named Marine Visitors (MV), representing connections between estuarine and marine environments. The second profile was named Estuarine Resident Estuarine (ER), comprising individuals who remained in the estuarine environment during their life cycle. Finally, the third identified profile was named Marine Migrator (MM), represented by individuals who remained in estuarine environments during the early stages of the life cycle and apparently migrated permanently to the marine environment. In this study, the great plasticity of this species was observed in the use of adjacent estuarine and coastal environments, a possible adaptation to the euriraline conditions that allow the persistence of stocks / populations in high abundance in this transition region between the temperate and tropical areas of southeastern Brazil. Brazil.O estudo visa investigar a conectividade de um importante recurso pesqueiro da costa do Sudeste do Brasil (tainha, Mugil liza) entre sistemas costeiros semifechados e a zona costeira adjacente, objetivando fornecer subs?dios para preserva??o e uso sustentado. Duas abordagens foram utilizadas buscando alcan?ar este objetivo, e que correspondem aos dois cap?tulos da Tese: 1. Morfometria de ot?litos sagittae; 2. Microqu?mica de ot?litos sagittae. Os peixes foram coletados ao longo de cerca de 612 km de extens?o da costa, abrangendo os estados do Rio de Janeiro e S?o Paulo, nos seguintes sistemas semifechados e em suas respectivas zonas costeiras adjacentes: estu?rios de Santos/Guaruj? e proximidades de Caraguatatuba/Ilha Bela; baias de Sepetiba/Ilha Grande e Guanabara; e lagunas de Saquarema e Maric?. Buscou-se, atrav?s das duas abordagens investigar a exist?ncia de diferentes grupos populacionais ao longo da ?rea de estudo, a conectividade populacional entre os sistemas e os grupos populacionais, e a exist?ncia de diferentes padr?es de movimenta??o dos indiv?udos dentro dos diferentes sistemas (lagunas, baias e estu?rios). No primeiro cap?tulo testamos a exist?ncia de diferentes estoques populacionais de tainhas ao longo da costa dos estados de S?o Paulo e Rio de Janeiro. Partindo da premissa de que os diferentes morfotipos e/ou varia??es na forma dos ot?litos podem representar diferentes popula??es/estoques, testamos a hip?tese de que exista mais de um estoque/popula??o de Mugil liza ao longo da ?rea de estudo. Para isso utilizamos descritores el?pticos de Fourier e ?ndices morfom?tricos para identificar varia??es na forma. Um padr?o geogr?fico de separa??o, sugerindo a exist?ncia de ao menos dois grupos populacionais ao longo da ?rea de estudo foi detectado, tendo sido revelado a presen?a de tr?s morfotipos de ot?litos que n?o apresentaram um padr?o clinal de distribui??o, sugerindo a ?rea de estudos como uma ?rea de transi??o para diferentes grupos populacionais de M. liza. No segundo cap?tulo foram estudados os padr?es de movimentos e de uso dos sistemas semifechados e da zona costeira aberta, partindo da premissa de que as tainhas utilizam sistemas estuarinos durante a fase inicial do seu ciclo de vida e migram para a plataforma quando adultos, compondo o estoque migrador/desovante da esp?cie. Testamos a hip?tese de que exista uma diferencia??o individual de uso, onde alguns indiv?duos retornam para o ambiente estuarino ap?s a desova e alguns indiv?duos n?o precisam sair dos sistemas estuarinos para completar o ciclo de vida. Para isso foram avaliados os perfis elementares de estr?ncio (Sr) e b?rio (Ba) das tainhas capturadas no interior dos principais sistemas estuarinos e respectivos locais da zona costeira adjacente. As concentra??es de Sr ao longo do eixo n?cleo-borda (historia de vida) e n?cleo (?reas de nascimento) sugerem distintas popula??es/estoques e ?reas de nascimento tanto na plataforma adjacente como na regi?o estuarina. Tr?s perfis de movimenta??o foram identificados sendo mais comum o Marinho Visitante (MV), representando conex?es entre os ambientes estuarinos e o ambiente marinho. O segundo perfil, Estuarino Residente (ER), compreende os indiv?duos que permaneceram no ambiente estuarino durante o todo o ciclo de vida. Por fim, o terceiro perfil identificado, Marinho Migrador (MM), representado por indiv?duos que permaneceram em ambientes estuarinos durante as primeiras fases do ciclo de vida e migraram aparentemente de forma definitiva para o ambiente marinho. description The study aims to investigate the connectivity of an important fishery resource along the southeastern Brazilian coast of (mullet, Mugil liza) between semi-closed coastal systems and the adjacent coastal zone, aiming to provide subsidies for preservation and sustainable use. Two approaches were used to achieve these objectives, which correspond to the two chapters of the Thesis: 1. Morphometry of the Sagittae otolith; 2. Biochemistry of the Sagittae otolith. The fishes were collected along about 612 km, covering the coast of the states of Rio de Jneiro and S?o Paulo, in the following semi-closed systems and in their respective adjacent coastal zones: estuaries of Santos/Guaruj? and proximities of Caraguatatuba/Ilha Bela; bays of Sepetiba/Ilha Grande and Guanabara; and the coastal lagoons of Saquaremma and Maric?. We investigated, through the two approaches, the existence of different population groups throughout the study area, the population connectivity between the systems and the stocks/populations, and the existence of different pattern of individual movements within the different systems (lagoons, bays and estuaries). In the first chapter we tested the existence of different stocks of mullets along the coast of the states of S?o Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Assuming that different morphotypes and/or variations in otolith shape may represent different populations/stocks, we tested the hypothesis that there is more than one Mugil liza stock/population across the study area. For this, we used Fourier elliptical descriptors and morphometric indices to identify variations in the shape of otoliths throughout the study area. A geographical pattern of separation, suggesting the existence of at least two stocks/populations throughout the study area was detected, and the presence of three otolith morphotypes that did not show a clinal distribution pattern was found, suggesting that the study area is a transition area for different stocks / populations of M. liza. In the second chapter, the patterns of movement and use of semi-closed systems and open coastal zone were studied. Assuming that mullets use estuarine systems during the early phase of their life cycle and migrate to the platform as adults, to be part of the migratory/spawning stock of the species. We tested the hypothesis that there is an individual differentiation of use, with some individuals returning to the estuarine environment after spawning and some others individuals do not need to exit estuarine systems to complete their life cycle. For this, the elemental strontium and barium profiles of the mullets captured within the main estuarine systems and respective coastal zone sites were evaluated. Sr concentrations along the nucleus-edge (life history) and nucleus (birth areas) axis suggest distinct populations / stocks and birth areas in both the adjacent platform and the estuarine region. Three movement profiles were identified, with the most common named Marine Visitors (MV), representing connections between estuarine and marine environments. The second profile was named Estuarine Resident Estuarine (ER), comprising individuals who remained in the estuarine environment during their life cycle. Finally, the third identified profile was named Marine Migrator (MM), represented by individuals who remained in estuarine environments during the early stages of the life cycle and apparently migrated permanently to the marine environment. In this study, the great plasticity of this species was observed in the use of adjacent estuarine and coastal environments, a possible adaptation to the euriraline conditions that allow the persistence of stocks / populations in high abundance in this transition region between the temperate and tropical areas of southeastern Brazil.
