The objective of this work was to get given referring to the productive systems, of the forest and natural resources, since familiar farmer PRONAF category, for identification of the profile of the farmers (peasant), its potential of framing in the Forest PRONAF, as well as its interest in forest and agroforest systems, using the participatory rural diagnosis, in two distinct geographic regions of the State of Rio de Janeiro, between September of 2004 and February of 2006. In the region Metropolitan, 11 farmers in the communities of Mazomba (Itagua?), and 15 of Xer?m (Duque de Caxias) had been interviewed. In the Serrana region, 13 farmers in some communities in Nova Friburgo, and 15 in one in Santa Maria Madalena, had been interviewed. The gotten data duly had been systemizing for composition of matrices, for better ordinance and understanding of the results. The analysis of main components was used to define the profiles of the interviewed farmers. The gotten results had shown to have heterogeneities enter the interviewed farmers in the region Metropolitan and that, for diverse criteria, 50% would not be fit as beneficiary of the credit facility of the Forest PRONAF, being 45.5% in Itagua? and 53.3% in Duque de Caxias. Three profiles of farmers, being one had been identified, with 23% of the interviewed ones, without interest in introducing forest species; as a group, with 23%, whose areas of the properties are superior to the maximum limit demanded by the PRONAF, however interested in diversifying the production with forest species; and one third group, with 53.9% of the interviewed ones, that they do not present homogeneous characteristics, with interest in introducing forest and agroforest activities. Between the interviewed ones it was observed, also, that a necessity of reforestation in the properties exists, therefore only 36.3% of the properties interviewed in Mazomba (Itagua?) and 66.6% in Xer?m (Duque de Caxias) possess enough forest covering for composition of Legal Reserve Area. In the Serrana region, it was observed that 7.6% of the farmers interviewed in Nova Friburgo and 53.3% in Santa Maria Madalena would not be fit as possible beneficiaries of the Forest PRONAF, being 32% in both municipalities. In this region, others three groups of farmers had been identified, being a first group, with 60.7% of the interviewed ones, without a homogeneous productive profile, revealed interested in the implantation of forest or agroforest systems, with lumber or fruitful species; as a group, with 21.4%, that they possess forest vegetation in the property, revealed interested in lumber species; and the third group, in Santa Maria Madalena, representing 17.8%, inside does not possess interest in the diversification of the activities of the property, with forest planting. In this region also it was observed the necessity of reforestation in the properties for, at least if adjusting of the legal point of view. In this direction, it was observed that only 53.8% of the properties interviewed in Nova Friburgo and 13.3% Santa Maria Madalena possess sufficient vegetal covering for composition of Legal Reserve Area.
