Resumo: | Even with all the prognoses about the aging process of the Brazilian population, where the elderly will be a segment of the society proportionally more representative and numerous, the elderly citizen is still considered as being outdated and incapable. This understanding of the condition of old age in Western societies leads to an increase in the social isolation of the elderly person, resulting in a loss of quality of life and an increase in cases of depression and suicide. A new modality of coexistence space for the elderly has been expanding in Brazil, the so-called "Day Centers", a social equipment that is part of the Unified Social Assistance System (SUAS). These spaces are being considered as a counterpoint to the Long Stay Institutions for the Elderly, also called Asylums, since they allow to the elderly the possibility to keep maintaining social relations with their families, as well as the bond with their home, their living space. However, many doubts still linger about the real contribution of Day Centers in Brazil. In view of this new scenario, the objective of this study was to investigate whether Day Centers for the Elderly can be spaces that promote friendly relations, besides allowing the elderly to exercise their social function of remembering and speaking about their memories. With this objective in mind, a study of narratives was performed, constituting a qualitative and descriptive research. Elderly users of a public Day Center were interviewed, located in the interior of the State of São Paulo. It was verified that the Day Center can be configured in a space that promotes friendship, bringing together and encouraging users to try new interpersonal relationships that become part of their network of sociability. Consolidated friendships at the Day Center can act as a therapeutic component, helping seniors to combat depressive moods, softening feelings of loneliness, rejection, and abandonment. In addition, these elderly users of the Day Center have acquired a strong sense of group membership. The social function of the elderly to remember and tell their memories needs to be strengthened along with the activities of the Day Center, as well as the incorporation into the staff of a professional with training focused on group and individual listening actions. This research indicates that the Day Center does not constitute a "daytime deposit for the elderly” and may be a counterpoint to the Long-Term Care Institutions of the Elderly. The installation of new Day Centers should not be excluded from the agenda of public policies of aid and protection of the elderly in various governmental spheres, with the participation of other segments of society. |

The installation of new Day Centers should not be excluded from the agenda of public policies of aid and protection of the elderly in various governmental spheres, with the participation of other segments of society.
