Resumo: The aim of this research is to understand how the Orpheonic Singing discipline was set in the Atheneu Sergipense school curriculum between the years 1931 to 1956. Though the analyzed period corresponds to that of two educational reforms, the delimitation of this study was due to the locus of analysis, the Atheneu Sergipense, and the location of the documents related to the teaching of the discipline in the institution. The initial milestone is the same as the year in which compulsory singing was established in the secondary school curriculum at the national level according to Federal Decree No. 19,890 of April 18, 1931. Based on the concepts of School Discipline, according to André Chervel (1990), School Culture, according to Dominique Julia (2001) and Viñao Frago (2008), and Curriculum, in accordance with Ivor Goodson (1995), this research has a documental and historiographic approach and took as sources the on educational legislation (deliberated in the selected time frame) issued at national and local level, Sergipe newspapers, teaching manuals related to the teaching of that subject, as well as administrative and pedagogical documents of the Atheneu Sergipense, namely: memos, attendance books, log books, correspondence and gradebooks, stored at the Center of Education and Memory of Ath-eneu Sergipense, at the Sergipe’s Historical and Geographical Institute, at the Philharmonic Society of Sergipe and at the Epifânio Dória Public Library. Supported by the methodological contributions of Cultural History, this study made it possible to understand how the Orpheonic Singing was present in the school culture of the Atheneu Sergipense and to what extent was its performance outside the school. The results obtained based on the analysis of the sources con-sulted indicate that, in the institution, the teaching of the discipline mostly met what established the educational law in place at the time. Moreover, the contents located in the gradebooks re-ferred to the educational demands of the political regime of the time, however, the presentations outside the school displayed patriotic exaltation content and extolling of the then president, Getúlio Vargas.

Embora o período analisado corresponda ao ínterim de duas reformas educacionais, a delimitação se deu em virtude do lócus de análise, o Atheneu Sergipense, e da localização dos documentos relativos ao funcionamento da disciplina na instituição. O marco inicial coincide com o ano em que a obrigatoriedade do Canto Orfeônico foi estabelecida no currículo do ensino secundário, a nível nacional de acordo com o Decreto Federal nº 19.890, de 18 de abril de 1931. Fundamentada nos conceitos de Disciplina Escolar, segundo André Chervel (1990) e de Currículo, consoante Ivor Goodson (1995), esta pesquisa, de cunho documental e historiográfico, tomou como fontes a legislação (deliberada no marco temporal selecionado) relativa às questões educacionais em esfera nacional e local, jornais sergipanos, manuais didáticos relacionados ao ensino da referida disciplina, bem como os documentos administrativos e pedagógicos do Atheneu Sergipense, a saber: atas, cadernetas, livros de ponto, livros de registro, correspondências e boletins, salvaguardados no Centro de Educação e Memória do Atheneu Sergipense, no Instituto Histórico e Geográfico de Sergipe, na Sociedade Filarmônica de Sergipe e na Biblioteca Pública Epifânio Dória. Amparado pelos aportes metodológicos da História Cultural, este estudo possibilitou compreender de que forma o Canto Orfeônico esteve presente na cultura escolar do Atheneu Sergipense e em que medida se dava sua atuação extramuros da escola. Os resultados adquiridos com base na análise das fontes consultadas e em diálogo com o referencial teórico elegido indicam que na instituição, o funcionamento da disciplina foi em grande parte atendido pelo que estabelecia a legislação educacional em vigor.
