The objective of this research was to investigate the coping process and the impact of stroke on psychosocial adaptation from the perspective of the victim. This work was divided into three chapters. The first is a theoretical chapter in which the theoretical aspects about the coping theory were grouped together. The second chapter was the study 1, in which the psychological repercussions associated to stroke adaptation indexed in four databases (Scielo, PEPSIC, Scopus and Science Direct) were presented. It was analyzed 33 articles in their entirety with their methods, objectives and main results. The third chapter was an empirical study in order to identify the Coping Strategies used by the patients affected by stroke and to characterize the impact of the stroke on the victim of this condition in face of the psychosocial limitations imposed by the disease. Twenty-three people who have had a stroke for at least six months participated. They granted an interview based on thematic axes that were analyzed through IRAMUTEQ Software. When analyzing the data obtained in study 1, it was noticed that the Stroke brought a series of psychological repercussions in the life of the victim, and the main alterations were: Occurrence of anxiety and depression after stroke, decrease in Quality of Life and increase in Levels of stress after stroke. The results of study two refer to the activation of coping strategies with focus on the problem, focus on emotion and Social Support. Their use was seen with positive denotation in the adjustment to sequels and modifications of daily life. In the end, it is expected that knowledge about stroke coping can provide a basis for health professionals and related areas in the management of stroke victims.
