This research focused on the Agroecology and Organic Production Study Centers (ASCs), which are affiliated with higher education institutions and have played a significant role in promoting agroecology as a guiding principle for more sustainable agriculture. The main objective was to analyze ASCs as agents of Technical Assistance and Rural Extension (TARE), working alongside farmers to promote and implement experiences in ecological or organic agriculture. A socio-institutional approach was adopted, allowing an analysis of ASCs’ relationships with society, institutions serving farmers and consumers, and other TARE organizations. Methodologically, the study followed an exploratory and qualitative perspective, seeking to provide a comprehensive view of the ASCs’ work, their social and institutional relationships, and their role in promoting public policies such as PNATER and PNAPO. The study focused on ASCs selected through the CNPq public call no. 21/2016, located in Rio Grande do Sul. Data collection involved literature review, document analysis, interviews with key informants, and interviews with women farmers involved in actions of the ASC-PAMPA, which was chosen for an in-depth case study. Based on the collected data and theoretical framework, the study reflects on the relevance of ASC activities, despite the discontinuity of public policies that support their initiatives, often resulting in project interruptions or inactivity. The role of ASCs as TARE agents should be highlighted, as they foster the integration of education, research, and university extension, contributing to the consolidation of an agroecological framework in professional training.
