Resumo: Urban morphology impacts microclimate and human thermal comfort, especially in densely built areas characterized as urban canyons. In cities with a subtropical climate, such as Santa Maria – RS, these patterns can cause urban heat islands and intensify the sensation of thermal discomfort. In this context, the objective of this research was to analyze the influence of two urban canyons, with different orientations (north-south and east-west), on human thermal comfort. For this, delimitation and morphological and climate characterization of the study area, classification of Local Climate Zones (LCZ), microclimate measurements in loco of variables air temperature, relative humidity, wind and solar radiation (taken from March 7th 2025 to March 21st 2025), simulation of the Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) and Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) indices, and the analysis of the Sky Vision Factor (SVF) were carried out using RayMan Pro software. Results indicated that the orientation influenced the microclimate conditions, reflecting in the behaviors of both canyons. In the north-south canyon (weather station F), the maximum values of PET and UTCI were respectively 57.3 ºC and 48.4 ºC, at 12 a.m. For the east-west canyon (weather station A), the values were, respectively for PET and UTCI, 53.8 ºC and 44.7 ºC, also at 12 a.m. Considering SVF, the north-south canyon reached 77,2 % and the east-west, 69,9 %. The north-south canyon showed higher values for PET and UTCI. This result is due to solar radiation on the north-south canyon, always having its north-facing façade receiving direct radiation during the morning and afternoon, associated to lower SVF, favoring the accumulation of heat. On the other hand, the east-west canyon has facades receiving direct radiation alternately (morning and afternoon), and higher SVF, which contributes to liberation of heat due to ventilation and radiation. The results indicate that the east-west orientation is more favorable for human comfort, considering a hot weather. This study contributes to understanding how canyon orientation and SVF influence the PET and UTCI.

This study contributes to understanding how canyon orientation and SVF influence the PET and UTCI.A morfologia urbana exerce influência direta sobre o microclima e o conforto térmico humano, especialmente em áreas densamente construídas caracterizadas como cânions urbanos.
