This work presents the report of experience and analysis of results concerning the preparation for the Brazilian State Schools Mathematics Olympiad (OBMEP) on the education of junior high school students. It consists of a pilot project carried out in a Federal State School in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Fifty-one students from the eighth and ninth grades of junior high school answered well-elaborated math problems, which, to be solved, demanded considerable knowledge of related topics. Field work took place from March to the end of July 2018, totaling thirty-three periods held on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Activities were planned and carried out based on the Scienti c Initiation Program (PIC), on the Intensive Training Olympiad Center (POTI) as well as on tests of previous years (available on OBMEP site). It was also based on the guidance visit to the OBMEP Regional Center, managed by the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM). It should be emphasized that the script and organization of the activities can be applied in other classes or adapted to other realities, however they are not unpublished issues, but are extracted from the PIC, the POTI and the books of the collection of the Professional Master's Degree in Mathematics in National Network. Following the test taken during the rst phase of the Olympiad, statistics dispersion measures were applied in order to discuss quantitative results of the research. To model a qualitative work pro le, students answered questionnaires at the end of each study module.
