Resumo: The impacts of the colonial war became a fruitful theme in the literary production of the second half of the 20th century, texts taken by an ideological engagement and intense social criticism. This thematic opening was provided by the end of the Salazar dictatorship, in April 1974, and the consequent decolonization of African countries. With innovative narrative strategies, Portuguese literature dedicated to post-colonial themes tend to privilege the perspectives of characters marginalized by society and to problematize the totalizing discourse of official historical accounts. Lídia Jorge is a renowned author of this generation, whose fiction mainly explores the effects of the colonial experience in Portuguese society. In O vento assobiando nas gruas, is narrated the confrontation between two families, Leandro and Mata, who represent the stereotypes of the colonizer and the colonized. The profound social differences can be perceived in different spheres, such as in housing conditions, in the type of work and in the hierarchical relationships established between the two nuclei. Through the notion of historiographical metafiction and ex-centric voice (HUTCHEON, 1991), we intend to explore how the protagonist’s voice breaks with the colonial imaginary, establishing a strong criticism of the Portuguese society represented in the novel, which maintains practices of violence and intolerance guided by the opposition between me/other.

Com estratégias narrativas inovadoras, a literatura portuguesa que se dedica às temáticas pós-coloniais costuma privilegiar as perspectivas de personagens marginalizadas pela sociedade e a problematizar o discurso totalizante dos relatos históricos oficiais. Lídia Jorge é uma renomada autora dessa geração, cuja ficção explora principalmente os efeitos da experiência colonial na sociedade portuguesa. Em O vento assobiando nas gruas, narra-se o confronto entre duas famílias, os Leandro e os Mata, que representam os estereótipos do colonizador e do colonizado. As profundas diferenças sociais podem ser percebidas em diferentes esferas, como nas condições de moradia, no tipo de trabalho e nas relações de hierarquia estabelecidas entre os dois núcleos.
