This study analyzes the maps drawn by Captain Domingos Alves Branco Muniz Barreto. Our goal is to discuss the process of civilization of the indigenous peoples from Barreto's perspective, when he traveled through the Captaincy of Bahia and visited five indigenous villages and towns. While drawing the plans of the locations he visited, providing cartographic information, the captain reported on the historical and social organization of the local populations. The proposed analyses are linked to the indigenous and indigenist policies of the Colonial Period in Brazil, above all in order to understand, based on the plans drawn by Barreto between 1791 and 1792, to what extent the transformations carried out by the Portuguese Crown, throughout the process of appropriation of lands that previously belonged to the indigenous peoples, were able, through the establishment of settlements and “Indian villages,” to promote the intended process of civilization of the indigenous populations of the places represented. As well as the translations made by the indigenous peoples in the face of a set of new social devices that were imposed on them.
