Resumo: This dissertation investigated resin tapping of P. elliottii on the coastal plain of Rio Grande do Sul, integrating gum-rosin production, wood technological quality, and management recommendations. The overarching goal was to assess how different operational patterns and inputs (tapping intervals and stimulant pastes) affect yield, and how tapping relates to the wood’s physico-mechanical properties under real field conditions. Large-scale experiments were conducted: (i) stimulant-paste trials (12 formulations; 1,200 trees) with quarterly harvests; and (ii) wood technology evaluations (sampling across sites and ages; specimens prepared according to ABNT NBR 7190) to determine density and strength (parallel/perpendicular compression and static bending), in addition to studies of anatomical variables. In the technological component, resin tapping did not depreciate wood quality; on the contrary, localized increases in density and mechanical properties were observed in regions with resin pockets (resinosis), while site and management conditions explained most of the variability in quality. In the production component, no significant differences among pastes were detected in the global model; however, tapping interval showed an effect: a 15-day interval tended to outperform 18 days in annual aggregates, with seasonal responses (18 days performing better in summer and 15 days during milder/cooler periods). On average, annual yield was about 5 kg per tree without a winter pause. Ethephon-based formulations showed operationally robust performance. Based on the findings, the dissertation recommends: (i) prioritizing a phenology-aware tapping calendar (adjusting the interval by season); (ii) maintaining continuous campaigns when the goal is to maximize annual yield; and (iii) using technological/anatomical metrics and stand vigor indicators to modulate intensity (one or two faces, streak size, interval). Overall, the work provides an applied basis for technical decisions and sector policies on P. elliottii resin tapping in subtropical environments, aligning productivity with downstream wood use.
