Resumo: This work investigates the relation of non-heterosexual people with Netflix Originals LGBTQIA+ TV Shows. Built on the theory of mediations (Martín-Barbero 1997; 2004) and the fourth map of mediations (Martín-Barbero and Rincón, 2019), I propose to investigate, based on narratives, technicities and identities, how non-heterosexual people relate to Netflix Originals LGBTQIA+ TV shows and how reception process occurs. Therefore, linked to cultural studies, I discuss questions of identity and its connection to media and reception (Hall, 2006; Martín-Barbero, 1997; 2004). Regarding sexuality, I rely on the concept of heteronormativity (Warner and Berlant, 2002) and reflect on sexual identities (Louro, 2003; Simões e Facchini, 2009). The mediation of narratives is thought based on Martín-Barbero (1997) and Rincón (2006), in addition to seriality (Machado, 2000; Buonanno, 2019). At last, Netflix is considered by mediation of technicities in an understanding of an internet-distributed television (Lotz, 2017). For that reason, I think of Netflix through a television approach (Jenner, 2018) and a platform approach (Silveira, 2019) and consider their recommendations system (Bucher, 2018; Pajkovic, 2022) as a central aspect. Methodologically, interviews were designed in two stages: semistructured interview (Kvale, 1997; Gray 2003) and interview with Netflix interaction, formulated on methodologies of algorithms and apps researches (Robards and Lincoln, 2017; Bucher, 2018; Light; Burgess; Duguay, 2016). Six individuals contributed to this research and shared their knowledge: a lesbian woman, a non-binary lesbian, two gay men, a bisexual woman and a non-binary pansexual. Results were ordered according to the three mediations of this research. As for narratives, the audience noticed a heteronormative aspect through the stories' unidimensionality and, in turn, demanded more naturality and fidelity in the shows plots so they are closer to their own life experiences. On identities, LGBTQIA+ TV shows constitute the recognition of their non-normative sexualities, as well as promote self-esteem and belonging. Moreover, identification and desidentification are pervaded by issues beyond sexuality. On technicities, Netflix was comprehended as a constant presence in participant’s lives. Regarding the recommendations system, decision making is conditioned by algorithmic logics in which people do not have fluency, but still create meaning to organize their Netflix use and highlight their tastes or personal preferences. Lastly, analysis expressed that reception by non-heterosexual people occurs in a constant negotiation of meaning in which culture and communication is constituted and reconstituted in a dialogical manner.
